TV Article First Oscars of the season handed out at Governors Awards ceremony By John Young Updated on July 30, 2020 04:08PM EDT On Saturday night, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences threw its first Governors Awards event to honor legendary actress Lauren Bacall, B-movie director Roger Corman, The Godfather cinematographer Gordon Willis, and studio executive and producer John Calley, the Los Angeles Times reports. Bacall, Corman, and Willis received Oscar statuettes, while Calley was recognized with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. Due to health concerns, Calley couldn’t accept his award in person, but past Thalberg winners (including Steven Spielberg, Warren Beatty, and George Lucas) accepted the honor on his behalf. The three-hour dinner party, which was held at the Grand Ballroom above Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre, marked the first time the Academy bestowed its honorary awards at an event other than the annual Academy Awards ceremony. Although the Governors Awards was not televised, portions of the evening may be shown during the upcoming Oscars telecast on March 7.
