The Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) initiative was launched by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in 2017 with the understanding that trusting relationships and collective power at the community level can drive the systemic changes necessary to help all children grow, learn and thrive. WKKF is now advancing this vision through a sustained investment in racial healing to advance racial equity, as well as support for a new national community of practice.
TRHT prioritizes resources to grow the movement across more communities in the U.S. This most recent investment of approximately $6 million will help strengthen the efforts of seven communities and organizations, including:
- Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana (Foundation for Louisiana)
- Buffalo, New York (Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo)
- Selma, Alabama (Black Belt Community Foundation)
- Battle Creek, Michigan (Battle Creek Community Foundation)
- Kalamazoo, Michigan (Kalamazoo Community Foundation)
- Jackson, Mississippi (Foundation for the Mid South)
“The pandemic and recent upticks in racialized violence underscore the need for us to act in solidarity to achieve racial equity. Healing is at the center of racial equity. It offers space to address traumas and biases, forge strong relationships across difference and expand the heart-centered will to create a more equitable world for children and their families,” said La June Montgomery Tabron, president and CEO of the Kellogg Foundation. “TRHT communities know firsthand the value of focused efforts to dismantle racism and build new systems that work for everyone.”
WKKF will also support efforts to attract and develop a network among more communities interested in applying the TRHT framework to address inequities in their localities. A national community of practice will expand the reach of TRHT so more individuals and organizations can begin or continue their work to heal from the impacts of racism while making structural and systems changes within their communities. The national community of practice will be led by Dr. Gail C. Christopher, an innovator in racial healing and the TRHT framework and the current executive director of the National Collaborative on Health Equity.
