Is NASCAR's rulebook just a suggestion at this point? What's going on at Pocono?

There was utter chaos and confusion surrounding the restart of the Truck Series race at Pocono Raceway. With 8 laps to go, the officials had to red-flag the race due to untimely weather. As soon as the track got clear and conditions were apt to get the race back to green, the entire field ran two caution laps.

But there was a final twist in the tale as the clouds opened up once again and a second red flag had to be out. Finally, the skies cleared and the race was allowed to go back green, but this is where NASCAR made a huge blunder. Initially, the race was to restart with eight laps, but suddenly it was brought down to six.

The officials counted the two caution laps that were run on the track and, therefore, revised the lap count for the restart. Prominent NASCAR insider Jeff Gluck tried to explain what led officials to come to this decision: “UPDATE: NASCAR just changed ruling. Those caution laps DID count and now they say there are only six laps to go.”

A similar new rule was exercised last weekend in Chicago by setting a clock until which they would decide the race winner. This would have been in play had the field not gone back to racing after the second red flag. However, fans were just not having it and called NASCAR’s decision a mockery of the rule book.

Fans had enough of surprise changes to the rules for a NASCAR race

It is just hard to believe that a last-minute call could simply make or break a driver’s race. Especially with the different strategies involved, this muck-up could’ve been detrimental to teams and drivers. Not only that, but this could seriously put the rule book out the window with the way the race was called. It felt like they made this up, and it was a split-second call, “Stop making up things”.

Some could not help but laugh at the way NASCAR is going about its business and calling out the race, “Lmfao they just make the rules up as they go anymore”.

Restart line fumble at Richmond, Contrasting rulings on driver penalties in Chicago, the new time clock, and tire selection during the rain. These are examples of how NASCAR has been under the scanner for tweaking its own rules, and this is exactly what this fan was trying to convey with his reply. “Mannn I don’t think I’ve seen so many races in a year where rules were changed mid race from the existing rule book”.

It’s not even the rampant changes NASCAR is trying to bring to the sport. But the very idea of trying to clear the mess goes out the window with their inconsistent decisions. “Rulebook was thrown out years ago, I see NASCAR can’t keep consistency with their own rules”.

Out of all the angry responses, this race fan had a rather practical and genuine suggestion that could help the race go smoothly in case there were multiple stoppages. “They’ve always made the rules up as they go, but can they just make the stage caution laps not count? That would actually make sense”.

If NASCAR got their house in order and cut all the inconsistencies, the racing would be easy to watch. At this rate, they surely aren’t going to attract new fans to the sport with all this confusion and chaos.
