Primates play an important role in ecosystem functioning and offer critical insights into human e... more Primates play an important role in ecosystem functioning and offer critical insights into human evolution, biology, behavior, and emerging infectious diseases. There are 26 primate species in the Atlantic Forests of South America, 19 of them endemic. We compiled a dataset of 5,472 georeferenced locations of 26 native and 1 introduced primate species, as hybrids in the genera Callithrix and Alouatta. The dataset includes 700 primate communities, 8,121 single species occurrences and 714 estimates of primate population sizes, covering most natural forest types of the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina and some other biomes. On average, primate communities of the Atlantic Forest harbor 2±1 species (range=1-6). However, about 40% of primate communities contain only one species. We examined museum specimens and living animals to see if the pelage of L. chrysopygus varies individually, geographically or ontogenetically. We reviewed all known locality records of the species, and concluded that the pelage of L. chrysopygus varies individually and ontogenetically, but not geographically. The extent of the golden chromogenetic fields is larger in younger individuals, and the pelage becomes darker after successive moults. This study describes the 35-year progression of activities in the Pontal do Paranapanema region o... more This study describes the 35-year progression of activities in the Pontal do Paranapanema region of São Paulo State, Brazil. These activities began as a research project on the conservation ecology of the highly endangered Black Lion Tamarin and broadened into a landscape-scale restoration and conservation project involving the active participation of hundreds of landless families that colonized the region. Rather than viewing these colonists as a threat, a non-governmental organization arose to address their needs, providing training and support livelihoods. Local communities were engaged in conservation and restoration activities focused on studying the movement patterns of endangered species, environmental education programmes, planting native trees along riparian corridors, establishing coffee agroforestry plantings and initiating community-managed nurseries for the production of local native seedlings and non-native fruit trees. ABSTRACT Nas últimas décadas, as unidades de conservação (UC’s) do Brasil vêm sofrendo um process... more ABSTRACT Nas últimas décadas, as unidades de conservação (UC’s) do Brasil vêm sofrendo um processo de degradação devido a presença de atividades antrópicas nos seus arredores, isolando-as de outras áreas naturais. A fragmentação de habitats é um fator que ameaça a conservação da biodiversidade por isolar populações de diversas espécies e por dificultar ou cessar o fluxo genético imprescindível à viabilidade das espécies. Este trabalho estuda a evolução da ocupação humana ao redor do Parque Nacional de Brasília (PNB) e a Estação Ecológica de Águas Emendadas (EEAE), dois núcleos da Reserva de Biosfera do Cerrado, como estratégia de proteção contra a fragmentação, planejando um corredor ecológico que as interligue. [METODOLOGIA] Fazer-se-á um estudo comparativo do progresso da ocupação humana e formas de utilização do solo, desde os anos de implantação da Capital até os dias atuais, nas áreas ao redor e entre as reservas, através de mapas e imagens de satélite. Como verificados em outras metodologias já aplicadas à implantação de corredores, este estudo fornecerá as bases necessárias para definição do local e as dimensões do corredor mais adequadas àquela área. [RESULTADOS] Observou-se que a região noroeste do PNB até a EEAE (Chapada da Contagem) e a área ao norte de Sobradinho ainda estão bastante preservadas, provavelmente por terem topografia acidentada, dificultando a sua ocupação. Assim sendo, é uma área propensa a abrigar o corredor ecológico. Nessa região encontram-se também diversos mananciais, o que faz a sua preservação ainda mais crucial, havendo uma utilidade social, além de ecológica. [CONCLUSÃO] A implantação de um corredor ecológico, ou um sistema de corredores, entre o PNB e a EEAE é possível e irá garantir a conservação e a sustentabilidade dessas Unidades de Conservação, além de promover melhoria na quantidade e qualidade de água para o abastecimento humano do Distrito Federal.
