Last Tuesday, we successfully concluded the Fifth Meeting of the Expert Group on Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (MST) at UN Tourism Headquarters in Madrid, Spain. The Expert Group set the course for the implementation strategy for the Statistical Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (SF-MST) and is embarking on a new journey to build consensus around a set of standardized indicators to monitor the environmental, social, and economic impacts of tourism based on SF-MST. The day was packed with insightful presentations and discussions on topics such as the endorsement of the Statistical Framework for MST, strategies for its implementation, and pioneering examples from countries like Brazil, Canada, Germany and Mexico. A special thanks to all our speakers, including experts from the UN Tourism, UNCEEA, Centre for Regional and Tourism Research Denmark, Regional Government of Andalusia and In2Destination, who enriched our understanding of sustainability indicators for tourism. Thank you for all your valuable contributions, and we look forward to further collaboration in making tourism more sustainable! 🌍 The journey towards a more sustainable and responsible tourism sector took a significant leap forward last week at the Inaugural Event of the ESG Framework for Tourism Businesses. This gathering at UN Tourism Headquarters in Madrid brought together over 40 distinguished leaders and experts in ESG, sustainability, and tourism from across the globe to showcase the collaborative efforts of UN Tourism and the The Oxford SDG Impact Lab in developing the first harmonised Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Framework for Tourism Businesses. Attendees, including representatives from tourism ministries, the private sector, investment communities, academia, and civil society, engaged in insightful discussions on this pioneering global Framework, identifying critical actions to drive the sector forward sustainably.
