At last week’s 🎙️ #TheNTWKTalks🎙️, Julia Binder from IMD Business School, alongside industry experts Talke Schaffrannek (BASF), Boris Romero (Royal Philips), and Joost Kamermans (Seenons), shared insights on adopting circular business models. They discussed #circular models' business benefits and challenges and provided actionable advice for companies aiming to make this shift. Here are a few selected takeaways from this talk: 🟡 Circularity is good business: Julia Binder introduced five archetypes of circular business models with examples: valorizing waste, monetizing extended product life, optimizing resource use, capitalizing on regeneration, and servitizing products. 🟡 Embrace ecosystems: Ecosystems are essential to realizing these business models, requiring both internal and external collaboration and truly strategic partnerships. 🟡 Change mindset and practices: Shifting from linear to circular takes time. Broadly engaging the business and demonstrating value through both top-down and bottom-up approaches yield results. ”Think in value circles instead of value chains”. Think big, start small: To shift effectively to a circular economy, businesses need both practical experimentations with real-world tests and a clear ’North Star’. Talke is also a visiting lecturer on Sustainable Business Models and Circular Economy in Mannheim Business School. - Boris R. is a New Business Models Venture Lead at Royal Philips. He has experimented and implemented circular business models at Philips Personal Health division, from Product-as-a-Service, refurbishing and recommerce. Philips is active in circularity initiatives and recently was awarded the Cannes Lions Grand Prix award for their Better than New campaign. - Joost Kamermans co-founded Seenons in 2019 to challenge the status quo of waste management. With a strong focus on a zero waste future and the importance of the circular economy, Joost believes that solving the waste crisis is only possible through collective action. Seenons’ platform brings together businesses and waste collectors to reduce waste through data insights and partnerships with over 300 organisations, covering more than 100 waste streams. The company’s success is reflected in its rapid growth and multiple awards, operating today in 7 countries.
