Yesterday at #VERGE24, MN8 hosted a successful panel on #cleanenergy procurement led by Moderator Hana Kajimura from Trellis Group. The panel included MN8’s own Kevin Helmich, Stanford University’s Lincoln Bleveans, Iron Mountain’s Chris Pennington and Akamai Technologies’s Mike Mattera. Focusing on more than how they #procure clean energy, the SMEs dove into the why they procure clean energy. Here are three key reasons clean energy procurement is a major focus for companies: 📈 Clean energy has gone from a moral imperative to a must for businesses across the board. It’s not just “the right thing to do” - it’s also frequently the most cost-effective option. In addition, Utilizing renewable energy sources can be configured to best suit your business, meaning your company’s energy is customized for you, for less. 🕴Customers, investors and stakeholders are calling for companies to use more clean energy across their value chains. As more companies set ambitious sustainability goals, managing and reducing #Scope3 emissions has become a critical focus for CSOs, especially with new laws taking effect that will require disclosure of companies’ carbon footprint. For customers, it’s more important than ever to buy from companies that are understanding and reduce their impacts. 🛣️ The road to renewable energy is still being built, and companies have a huge ability to customize in ways that best suit their operations. Businesses have the rare opportunity to literally put the power in their hands, helping them meet both operational and sustainability goals at the same time. Thank you to all of our panelists, our fantastic moderator and all Verge attendees who joined us live yesterday. In 2023, energy from #renewable sources made up 30% of supplied global electricity. This figure is expected to grow to 37% by 2026. Driven not only by improvements in technology and growth of the sector, but also by corporations’ increased appetite for clean energy and ambitious #ESG and #sustainability goals set for the near future, it’s clear that all eyes are on renewable energy to power the globe. In his new blog, MN8 Energy CEO Jon Yoder explores how decarbonizing corporations today is helping to create the electricity system we need to power our future #sustainably. Earlier this week, MN8’s Head of Regulatory & Government Affairs Zander Bischof presented at the Pennsylvania House ERE Committee hearing on #PJM and Meeting Emerging #ElectricityDemand Trends. During his presentation, Zander shared recommendations on how PJM can address the ongoing challenges in the #capacity market driven by rapidly increasing peak demand related to #electrification, data center growth and onshoring of manufacturing. If you didn’t have a chance to catch the presentation live, here are four key recommendations to PJM from his testimony: 📈 Lean into the competitive market. There is an unprecedented number of resources in the queue that can help to meet growing demand in the PJM system. Now is the time to enable these resources to construct and connect to the system as soon as possible. In the process, PJM must protect the successful foundation on which they’ve built their market, including open access and an inclusive stakeholder process for updating market rules. 🏛️ Adopt a sub-annual market structure. A sub-annual market would result in more appropriate compensation and reduce risks outside of the resource’s control. 🔌 Revise interconnection processes. With interconnection presenting a major bottleneck, the focus should be on utilizing the system as efficiently as possible. A good place to start is introducing a more workable standard for Surplus Interconnection Service, which, for example, would allow battery energy storage to enter the system promptly utilizing interconnection service of existing solar and wind. ⚡ Prioritize proactive transmission planning. PJM needs to capitalize on the opportunity to improve its transmission planning process through its compliance filing related to FERC Order 1920. Implementing a proactive, multi-value, scenario and sensitivity-based transmission planning process is critical to serving growing load in the future.
