December 18th was World Arabic Language Day! To celebrate, we’re highlighting Danny Farra: the design lead who helped add Arabic language support to Google Lookout. “Lookout is an app that assists people with blindness and low vision by detecting text through the phone’s camera and reading it out loud,” Danny explained. “Arabic is one of the most spoken languages in the world, so it was crucial that Lookout could help people with visual impairments read the Arabic around them.” One of the challenges Danny and his team faced along the way was Arabic’s right-to-left language orientation — forcing the team to rethink how the app itself was designed. “We could have just built support for the camera to recognize and read Arabic out loud, but we also wanted to ensure the app’s interface felt natural to Arabic-speakers.” Despite the challenge, Danny felt this work to build a more inclusive app — one that’s built for users of all language orientations — was the most rewarding part. Thank you to Danny and all Googlers helping build more accessible products!

Excited to share our new technical report detailing significant advancements in LearnLM, our set of AI models and capabilities fine-tuned for learning. After testing a wide range of learning scenarios, pedagogy experts found that LearnLM consistently outperformed other leading AI models. It is notably better at following instructions, supporting learning goals, adapting to learner’s abilities — while adhering to foundational learning science principles. I invite you to experiment for yourself through Google AI studio, where LearnLM is available for preview access! As we continue to make improvements to LearnLM, these advances will be added to our Gemini models too. In fact, it’s already contributing to Gemini 2.0. If you’re curious to hear from the LearnLM team, I highly recommend you check out their recent interviews on the Ed-Technical podcast. It takes a deeper look at how we’re approaching this and why we’re so excited about the future it’ll unlock. (see links in comments below)
