Aurora Borealis Captured at Deimos Sky Survey...again! 🌌 For the second time this year, our all-sky camera at Deimos Sky Survey in Spain has captured the rare sight of the Aurora Borealis! This stunning display, which is highly unusual for our location, was triggered by a strong solar storm caused by a recent coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun. This solar episode resulted in heightened geomagnetic activity, allowing us to witness the beautiful light show once again. Solar Cycle 25 is in full swing, and with it, we are seeing increased solar storms like this. Our camera will keep watching! 👁️🌍 #AuroraBorealis #DESS #SolarStorm #CoronalMassEjection #NorthernLights #SpaceWeather

🌩 The approach of #HurricaneKirk towards Europe emphasizes the critical need for precise #cyclone monitoring. 💡 Did you know that DEIMOS is actively contributing to this field through the #CYGNSS mission? 🌀 The CYGNSS (Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System) mission was launched by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 2016 and consists of a constellation of eight small satellites equipped with #GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Reflectometers. These instruments analyze reflected signals from GNSS satellites (including GPS and Galileo) as they traverse the Earth’s atmosphere and bounce off the ocean surface. This technology enables scientists to gather critical data on tropical cyclones and their development. For this mission, DEIMOS developed a sea-state dependent L2 #windspeed retrieval algorithm that enhances the accuracy of CYGNSS wind speed products. Our tasks now are focused on further improvements to this L2 wind speed retrieval processor and exploring novel machine learning techniques for data retrieval, as well as estimating other key parameters like wind direction and sea state. Data products from CYGNSS are essential for organizations like #ECMWF and #NOAA, helping to refine weather forecasting models and improve predictions of storm intensity and trajectories. #TropicalCyclones #WeatherForecasting #AI

📢 ESA Awards Deimos €17 Million Contract for DRACO Space Sustainability Mission Deimos has secured a €17 million contract from the European Space Agency - ESA for the #DRACO (Destructive Re-entry Assessment Container Object) mission. The agreement for the first phase, valued at €3 million, was signed today during a ceremony in Puertollano between Simone Centuori, CEO of Deimos, and Holger Krag, Head of ESA's Space Safety Programme ESA Space Safety, with the presence of the director of the Agencia Espacial Española, Juan Carlos Cortés Pulido. Scheduled for launch in 2026, DRACO will be the world’s first demonstration of a controlled satellite break-up process, using a 150kg satellite to gather unprecedented data on re-entry dynamics. DRACO's objective is to provide detailed insights into the sequence of events during a satellite's destructive re-entry, supporting the development of technologies to ensure complete atmospheric burn-up. This effort directly aligns with ESA's #ZeroDebris initiative, aimed at enhancing the sustainability of space activities. As prime contractor, Deimos is proud to lead a consortium of European partners, including von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, Fluid Gravity Engineering (FGE) Ltd, @Belstead Research, Vorticity Ltd, @Dial, and @Hyperschall Technologie Göttingen. Their expertise and support are crucial to the success of this innovative mission, ensuring a safer and more sustainable orbital environment for future generations.
