    We have a new story for you that we recently learned from a top sales rep who decided to quit her job due to a poorly designed sales comp strategy. Three key factors that made her lose trust and leave the company: 👁 No visibility into commissions ⏳ Payment delays ❌ Erros in Payouts Here’s the story: Starting her new job as a sales exec at a healthcare equipment company was an exciting challenge. Six months in, she was beginning to see some issues. Despite putting in a lot of hard work, she felt like she was constantly running into obstacles. The compensation plan itself seemed straightforward when she finally received it: - 8% commission until you hit 100k - 12% commission from 100k-200k - 16% commission from 200k-400k. - If you exceed 400k in sales revenue, you get a 10k bonus. - Challenge: each quarter, the top performer in the team receives an additional 3k bonus. - Clawback: If a client returns the equipment within the first three months, the commission earned on that sale is deducted from future earnings. However, she quickly noticed some problems. The company had a habit of making commission payments late. This inconsistency made it hard to rely on her earnings. Tom, who had been with the company for five years, explained that the finance team needed to validate all commissions before payments were made, but sales managers for each unit had to review it before, causing finance to constantly chase them, turning that into the source of delays. Getting paid late was frustrating, but missing out on a bigger bonus by just closing a tiny sale was even worse. To top it off, she only received 40% of the expected payout coming from the second tier she unlocked, and resolving this discrepancy took way too long.     It's Friday and we have another rep story for you! This one highlights how compensation plans can be highly sensitive to economic fluctuations: ”Last year, I moved into a BDR Manager position at a Fortune 100 company. My team was on a compensation plan with a base salary of $75k+ and an OTE through a Sales Incentive Plan (SIP), which paid out based on closed/won deals. In our first year, the economy was strong, and the payouts were substantial. We were raking in the dough, and everyone was motivated and satisfied. The plan promoted teamwork and reduced conflicts over territories, which was great for our team culture. However, this year, the economic downturn has hit us hard. Our payouts have significantly decreased, and the impact is felt across the team. Despite the downturn, my team still prefers the SIP over a plan that pays based on meetings booked or opportunities created. They appreciate the clear focus on closed deals and the avoidance of aggressive competition. There are clear pros and cons to this plan. On the positive side, it promotes a positive team culture and reduces conflicts over territories, aligning incentives with actual revenue generation.
