From Proto-Germanic *helpaną, whence also Old English helpan, Old Frisian helpa, Old Saxon helpan, Old High German helfan, Gothic 𐌷𐌹𐌻𐍀𐌰𐌽 (hilpan). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱelb-, *ḱelp-.
