From Proto-West Germanic *ferh, from Proto-Germanic *ferhwą. Cognate with Old Frisian ferch, Old Saxon ferah, Old High German ferah, Old Norse fjǫr, Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌹𐍂𐍈𐌿𐍃 (fairƕus).

  • The astute learner with a knowledge of Finnish will be reminded of the Finnish word henki, which is similarly used of a life whose safety is questioned. Henkesi on vaarassa = Þīn feorh is on frēcennesse (“Your life is in danger”).
