Appearance
Proto-Germanic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain; the quasi-Indo-European reconstruction is *tew-o-s.[1] Possibly either from earlier *þegwaz, from Proto-Indo-European *tekʷ- (“to run”),[2] or from *tew(h₂)- (“to swell, grow”).
