Etymology

From Middle High German gevehte, from Old High German gifeht, from Proto-West Germanic *gafeht, from the verb *fehtaną (to struggle with). Equivalent to ge- +‎ fechten. Cognate with Dutch gevecht, Old English gefeoht.
