Egipto m

  1. (European Portuguese spelling) Pre-reform spelling (used until 1990) of Egito. Still used in countries where the agreement hasn't come into effect; may occur as a sporadic misspelling.

Usage notes

[edit]

Despite having an unpronounced ⟨p⟩, this form was prescribed in Portugal by the 1945 Orthographic Agreement, for symmetry with words in which the letter was pronounced, such as egípcio. By association with such forms, a significant part of the population did pronounce the ⟨p⟩ in Egipto (a nonstandard pronunciation). Nevertheless, the 1990 Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement proscribed the spelling.[1]
