Borrowed from English Peking, from the Nanjing court dialect Mandarin 北京 (Běijīng, literally “northern capital”), from before the modern palatalization of /k/ to /tɕ/.[1] The kanji are an orthographic borrowing from Chinese 北京 (Běijīng).
