[edit]Ellipsis of مَدِينَة الْقُدْس (madīnat al-quds), a calque of Classical Syriac ܡܕܝܢܬ ܩܘܕܫܐ (məḏīnaṯ quḏšā), from Hebrew עִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ (ʿîr haq-qṓḏeš, “the city of holiness”). Morphologically the definite of قُدْس (quds), from the root ق د س (q-d-s).
