Which Warcraft

[edit]
  • Erm, FYI, every single one of these quotes are actually from Warcraft III, not II. Leads me to believe the page may be entirely mistitled. Page should be retitled, though I don't see a "Move" feature like on Wikipedia. {shrugs} - Vaelor (Wikipedia) 17:55, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • Nope, not all of these are from Warcraft III. *Some* random ones are from Warcraft II. But you're right, most are from Warcraft III and should be moved... Anyone bother to install Warcraft II and mess around with War2sfx? I'm all out of Win32 APIs right now. Wwwwolf (Wikipedia) 12 Dec 2004
    • Disclaimer: The original bulk of these quotes were imported from Wikipedia's Warcraft II article; no fact checking was done. --Mrwojo 18:10, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I have moved this page from "Warcraft II" to "Warcraft" as a page for quotes from all the games in this series, and am about to add it to the List of electronic games, since it has not yet been listed there. ~ Kalki 21:13, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

"So angry" "So hungry" is at least NOT from Warcraft II. Removed FGJ.

  • Hmm. SOmebody should separate the normal voices from teh irritated ones, IMO.

Grom & Thrall vs Mannoroth

[edit]

Why was that qoute deleted? Isn't that a quote? Is it not from Warcraft III? IMHO that's one of the best moments in the entire game. I would like to know the reasons for it's deletion. --Koveras 12:08, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Probably because it was something so unbelievably rad you'd have to see it. I was considering putting it in the article around the time I added Medivh's farewell, but since no reason's been given I'll put it in. --Super Bhaal 14:26, 11 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

troll axethrowers / berserkers

[edit]

is "Say hello to my little friend!" originated from scarface or something even more ancient? 203.78.86.34 12:09, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Updating quotes

[edit]

I've begun updating the quotes. I've extracted the unit sounds from WarCraft II and WarCraft III with the level editors and started updating. I'm done with WarCraft II, adding missing quote. The first quote is the ready quote (when the unit is done building) followed by the 'What?' quotes (when you click on them), the "Yes" quotes (when you give them any order) and then 'Pissed' quotes (when you keep clicking on them).

I've also started with WarCraft III but stopped after the Dragonhawk Rider for now. I shall continue this work in the weekend hopefully. Same buildup, beginning with "Ready", followed by "What", "Yes" (when you give them any order but an attack order), "Yesattack" (when you give the unit an attack order), WarCry (sometimes used when you give an attack order) and then the pissed quotes. I've left a very few quotes out because I couldn't exactly understand what was said, mainly with Orcs. --Fogeltje 20:32, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've finished the Human Alliance units. I've moved the Blood Elf Engineer to the Human Alliance since he's a playable unit in the Alliance campaign in the Frozen Throne. I've added Sylvanas Windrunner to the Human Alliance and moved some Neutral Heroes to the appropiate factions (Illidan to Night Elf and Rokhan to the Horde). I've left Akama with the Neutral Heroes even though he features in the Human Campaign. --Fogeltje 22:47, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

About Shandris

[edit]

I think Shandris is a ranger who upgraded from an archer

Shandris is an archer with slightly raised stats. She definitely is no Ranger, she has no special abilities. --Fogeltje 21:17, 25 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mutilation

[edit]
  • Why have you mutilated this article!? I found it useful. Rename it. Don't destroy it by cutting out 97% of the content. -- kwyjibo 8:38 PM, Dec 5, 2006 (EST)

Wikiquote collects pithy quotations from notable people and creative works. It is not a repository for the entire content, or even a copyright-violating subset, of any work's text. This article's content was discussed at Wikiquote:Votes for deletion archive/Warcraft, and action was taken based on that discussion, which is now closed. You can add further interesting, select quotes, but please do not attempt to turn this article into a copyvio game transcription, as the old one was. Thank you for your cooperation. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 04:23, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

You still raped it. I don't see anything that violated copyright. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.6.238.180 (talkcontribs) 05:00, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
What you refuse to see or acknowledge is irrelevant. There are many people who choose to ignore copyright law because they don't feel it is reasonable. There is no punishment for wiki editors (other than blocking for ignoring policy), as they are anonymous (even the registered ones). The Wikimedia Foundation, however, cannot take this position, as it has substantial resources that are put at risk by such a cavalier attitude. Our French Wikiquote project was shutdown for a year because its editors failed to observe copyright law. If you do not wish to help us stay on the right side of the law, I'm afraid you will not find Wikiquote compatible with your interests. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 06:43, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
The remaining quotes are really really dumb, dont carry the general theme of the series(WC2 and 3) and also, only apply to WC3. Why do you take that WC3 quotes are not copyrighted and all WC2 quotes are? While i agree that the article had too many quotes before, you could have cut the crap out and left the better ones there. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.131.58.152 (talkcontribs) 00:32, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
It takes no effort at all to complain. What matters is how the article is edited. If people don't like the content of this article, they should learn the policies and practices of Wikiquote and apply them while making edits to the articles. If you don't want others to "mutilate" an article, you should edit it to be trim and pithy yourself. Be thankful this article wasn't deleted outright, as has been done in the past (and not by the folks who worked hard to make this one compliant) to articles where nobody showed any interest in proper selective quoting. Wikiquote is a community of editors; it only works as well as the time, effort, and care that everyone puts into it. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 01:43, 21 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
You certainly put no effort into the cleanup, Jeff. It doesn't break copyright law to add meaningful quotes. You totally subtracted the quotes from every game but Warcraft III and Frozen Throne. If you haven't seen the games yourself, how can you know what's important to add? If you really cared to cleanup the article you would have taken out some of the unit quotes in the meantime and asked for a cleanup project by those who originated the article. --67.172.5.190 10:20, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Reversion

[edit]

I have just reverted this article to the VfD-approved starting point because subsequent editors continue to add the most inane, unoriginal material to the article in an obvious attempt to make this not a pithy quote article but rather a Warcraft transcription page. For the last time, this is not what Wikiquote is about. Editors are invited to add original quotes that stand out as representative of the wit, humor, and pathos of the subject, but not to merely scribble down everything that happens in the game. Dialog that is unoriginal or whose meaning requires one to observe the audiovisual material of the game to understand it simply does not make for reasonable quotes here. Please comply with these guidelines. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 13:01, 21 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • And this is where we hit a difference of opinion. The sheer number of pop- and geek-culture references found in the "pissed" quotes are a part of the wit (as it were) of the game, and Warcraft in particular. That underneath the serious storyline of the universe is a whole lot of in-game silliness. Sure, not every single reference has to be put in (this is something that will likely seesaw though this entry's entire life cycle. Believe it!), but to completely remove them, especially to the point that you have cut entries from three of the four games, does both the entry and the readers of said entry a great disservice. Cleanup is fine, but let's not toss the baby out with the bathwater. SAMAS 16:07, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • I did a temporary unreversion with a bit of cleanup. Now, I'm going back into it, and previous versions, for a more thurough cleanup and the more notable quotes. SAMAS 16:28, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
      • Okay, the way I broke them down was to keep their "ready" quotes, and a few I thought captured the character and attitude of the unit or character in question, as well as some of the more involved or widely-known in-jokes and references. What I think we need now are more story-based quotes from the games and novels and such. SAMAS 17:50, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

SAMAS, the reason I reverted to an older version is that the editors, yourself apparently included, don't seem to have the least concept of what an original, pithy quote is. Some blatant examples:

  • Your sound card works perfectly.
    • When clicking the sound test button
      • This isn't original or pithy.
  • I'd rather be sailing.
    • Utterly unoriginal!
  • (vomiting)
    • This isn't even a quote! It's a sound effect!

There are only about 10 people here who watch the more than 9000 articles to attempt to establish bare minimum usefulness for these articles, which is, of course, impossible. Wikis only work when the majority of editors believe in the mission and principles of the project and exert themselves to craft articles that meet its standards. When editors of an article don't do this, it means others editors must take less desirable expedient action, like reverting to a minimally useful version or (as has been done by Wikimedia Foundation personnel unwilling to wait for us to get our act together) completely blanking or deleting the article, in order to either stimulate folks to doing a proper job or at least get rid of junk.

Until this article's regular editors demonstrate by their work that they understand what kinds of quotes are desirable, and that Wikiquote is not the place to merely transcribe events from any audiovisual work, this and other similar articles can expect to have their content severely cut down. Anyone who wants scene or event transcriptions is welcome to create their own Warcraft website through many of the free services available these days. But they cannot expect to use Wikiquote to do so. Those who wish to stay and record meaningful quotes must rise to the challenge of selective quoting and ongoing filtering of inanity.

I will check back in a while to see if progress is being made on this. If not, I will again revert to the earlier version. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 22:14, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

    • I'm assuming a general lack of detailed knowledge of the Warcraft games on your part here.

Now, I admit that some people went overboad on the addition of unit quotes in this game, and a couple others. But they're not transcriptions of any events (well, maybe the one about Arthas killing Terenas is).

In context, they're literal quotes, the lines given by units in the game when you click on them, give them orders, or, especially, when you click on them several times in a row. Previous versions, before the vfD, consisted of only the "Pissed" unit quotes, because they were examples of the wit of the game itself. Similarly the "Joking" and "Flirting" lines from WoW, which I know nothing about.

In example, the vomiting quote is part of Blizzard's habit of stretching a single theme along two or three Pissed quotes. It's not much by itself, but take it in the context of the two quotes above, which show the captain of the ship is getting seasick due to the excessive rocking of the ship caused by the player's clicking.

In this case, we're not looking for pithy as in "poignant", but as in "meaning". In this case, using the quotes to convey the sense of the game itself, both the story and the overall term of the game that crosses the fourth wall. SAMAS 22:38, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't know who "we" is supposed to represent, but Wikiquote articles must follow Wikiquote guidelines and serve Wikiquote purposes. Wikiquote articles are not meant to "convey a sense of the game"; they are meant to selectively cite phrases that stand out as especially unique, memorable, and interesting to a general audience. Until someone with an awareness of the requirements and restrictions that Wikiquote must observe demonstrates this by weeding out the overly exuberant additions of scraps of manifestly inane, unoriginal quotes, those of us who can't take the time for careful analysis of every single article will simply revert to an established acceptable version.
If this continues too long, don't be surprised if someone from the Wikimedia Foundation simply blanks or deletes the whole friggin' thing. We (the sysops) don't want that anymore than you do, but we can't hope to fight such persistent refusal to abide by guidelines across 9000 articles. Sometimes the big guns come in to slap us on the collective wrist for misbehavior. (See Mitch Hedberg, another persistently excessive article.)
There are plenty of places on the web to collect far more material for any particular subject. Please do not try to use Wikimedia Foundation resources to accomplish this. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 06:06, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • Jeff Q - It's simple - if you've played the game, you'd understand why the quote is of note. It's funny when you hear it, because of its context. Since it's funny, it's memorable, and it deserves to be on the page that represents the interesting quotes from the game. It doesn't have to be of interest to people unfamiliar with the source material. 98.233.3.231 03:50, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Quotes by their very nature are taken out of context. Things that are only meaningful to someone familiar with their source and context just do not make good quotes. Even though I am an aficionado of certain games myself, in the context of Wikiquote's purpose I do not consider most game material quotable when I guess you had to be there. ~ Ningauble 15:26, 14 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have an idea: why don't we delete all the unit quotes and link to the WoWWiki quote page for that purpose? It's external and the staff is kind of....well, more or less what Jeff Q was talking about, but it'd be better than what we have here (clutter). --Super Bhaal 22:03, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't see any problems with that proposal. You'd have to think what to keep, but it's hard to define a very few selected memorable quotes to stay in this article. I don't know how large the moderation team on wikiquote is like, but it kind of surprises me that the reverting from the VfD version back to the page with ALL the quotes has gone unnoticed/not acted upon. But eventually, in this state, this article might come up for deletion again and will probably not pass a second time.--Fogeltje 12:33, 11 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Old Man

[edit]

The opening Reign of Chaos cinematic voice is narration is assigned "Old Man". Is his age and gender only an inference, or is there more information on him? I envisioned him as being Medivh; perhaps this or other connections could be learned from examining voice actors?
