Portal?

We should work on creating a toys portal to go along with this WikiProject. That will allow us to better organize things and get a better handle on what needs to be done. This will also add some more structure to the project - we can show off articles, add a standard portal template to related articles and really draw a lot of attention to this project. Article contents guidelines

I've been working at improving various doll articles, and the more I edit, the more I need some kind of guide. There's a frustrating number of articles tagged with "fansite" but no constructive ideas whatsoever. I'm considering starting something on my own, based on Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Article guidelines, Wikipedia:WikiProject Games#Article structure and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (anime- and manga-related articles), but I'm a pretty inexperienced editor.Siawase (talk) 20:42, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

VF-1 Valkyrie

The VF-1 Valkyrie article was prodded. I deprodded it because it was a popular and notable toy, with a descendant Transformers toy as well. 70.51.11.210 (talk) 07:53, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Assessment?

Hey there. Just wondering, but has this project ever thought about adding an assessment scheme? Without it, articles from this project won't be featured in Wikipedia releases, such as the upcoming 0.7 and eventual 1.0. BOZ (talk) 22:05, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

I recently worked the Play-Doh article up to what I thought was GA status but it failed to pass. Anyone care to give it a look-see with suggestions, copy-edit, etc. in order to renominate the article? Thanks! Let me know! ItsLassieTime (talk) 02:39, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

How about an infbox for Toys? I've used this once or twice and adapted it from one at G.I. Joe. Things I don't like but don't know how to fix: the center margin (prefer to see categories at the left margin; color of title box)...Things I like (flexibility - fields can be added with little ado by any editor, nothing is fixed in stone. For instance, if one wanted to add an "Accessories available with original" category, it could easily be done by editing the box at the article.) I don't know how to create an Infobox. Anyone? ItsLassieTime (talk) 02:52, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Nice to see some activity on here! :D That's a good idea, and looks pretty good. Unfortunately I don't know anything about templates either. Some other good fields might be creator (which in some cases is an artist or person notable in their own right), units sold, and ages (that it's intended for). Possibly release year in addition to (or instead of) era, since era doesnt always apply. Some toys barely last a year after release, and some hang on for decades. And not to start a WP:BIKESHED thing, but maybe since it is for toys, make it a little more colorful, the bg from the WP Toys template is pretty nice. Siawase (talk) 12:00, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
There is an Template:Infobox toy already. 70.29.213.241 (talk) 05:17, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Yes, "Template:Infobox toy" does exist. However the template currently is nothing but a duplicate of Template:Infobox VG, therefore it would need a complete rewrite to become useful for any purpose wanted here (ideally, using {{Infobox}} as the parent template for this so that the code is easier to understand/read). I might be able to do it myself...
...but if you want it done it will save me the time and trouble if you can list each and every field you want in the infobox. That will make it much easier for me to build it up to expectations. Regards. [|Retro00064|☎talk|✍contribs|] 08:56, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

suggesting an article for improvement

The article on Stevanne Auerbach, more commonly known as Dr. Toy, is awful. She's plenty notable in the toy industry, but this goes beyond notability into the realm of advertisement. I can't work on this article because Stevanne is a friend of mine, so I'm suggesting someone here take a look at it with an eye toward paring it way down.--Mike Selinker (talk) 17:29, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:48, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Toy Story is a new GA

Hi. The article Toy Story has just passed GA. Does this project have its own assessment that needs to be done, or do you just go along with the main Wikipedia rating? Should the Wikiproject Toys rating on Toy Story be changed to GA as well? ~SunDragon34 (talk) 04:54, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

GAR for Rubik's Cube

The article Rubik's Cube is tagged as being a part of this WikiProject, so I am letting the members know that I have started a Good Article Reassessment as part of the GA Sweeps process. You can find a list of my concerns on the article's talk page. Thanks and good luck! Nikki311 00:40, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! He-man and She-Ra mergers

I dunno if this is the right forum since it has been a toy but I believe Princess Adora and She-Ra should be merged the same with He-Man and Prince Adam its like Bruce Wayne and Batman having separate articles even though they are the same person.

Is Mattycollector.com considered a good source of information?

I really feel alot of the characters in Masters of the Universe need a major overhaul such as Stratos ,He-Ro and many others should allowing myself to use Mattycollector.com be permissable as a credible source of information. [1] [2]

Dwanyewest (talk) 22:18, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

To my mind, it falls into the category of links to be avoided, specifically "links to web pages that primarily exist to sell products or services". --GentlemanGhost (talk) 14:16, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
What GentlemanGhost said, linking to a store is always problematic. It might loosely fall under WP:SELFPUB since it's an official site, but it is a shop so whatever information can be gleaned from there likely would run afoul of various WP:NOT issues anyway (avertising, catalog, directory). You might want to ask at WP:RS/N for further advice. Siawase (talk) 16:00, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Template:Infobox toy has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for deletion page. Thank you. RL0919 (talk) 17:06, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Masters of the Universe sort out in need of deletion

List of Masters of the Universe vehicles needs to be deleted as it doesn't fit wikipedia's standards for notability WP:GNG and also Talon Fighter needs to go too

Dwanyewest (talk) 01:10, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Take a look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion for info on how to handle it. The Talon Fighter article in particular looks like maybe it could be merged rather than deleted. Also see the "Before..." section for various alternatives. Siawase (talk) 13:23, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

I disagree they should be kept by where would I need to take it to get a final decision there are too many poorly written Masters of the Universe articles with little citations or real justification of notability. Dwanyewest (talk) 03:39, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not for fan speculation or essays. There were no reliable sources, and as such constituted original research (specifically WP:SYNTH). If sources can be provided to demonstrate that this is notable in any real-world sense then sources should be added.

Dwanyewest (talk) 02:51, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Is Oafe.com considered a good source of information?

[3][4] if it doesn't meet wikipedia's criteria for reliable sources this website is populated over Masters of the Universe related articles. Dwanyewest (talk) 01:23, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

From looking at the information on the site itself, it looks like it'd fall under WP:SELFPUB, like a blog or a fansite, since I don't see any publisher info other than the site itself, and the reviewers appear to be posting pseudonomously with no claim of expertise. However, it may depend on what the site is being used to verify, and it would help if reliable sources have quoted the site or given favorable comments on it. Again, you may want to ask at WP:RS/N as well. Siawase (talk) 13:37, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Cat for Labor Union Representing Toy Factory Workers

Hello, I'm working on creating articles for the minor trade unions in the AFL-CIO. The International Union of Allied Novelty and Production Workers historically represented workers in toy factories in the United States (Novelty=Toy). I added it to the general Category:Toys cat because Category:Toy companies didn't fit. You may want to add a subcat called Category:Toy organizations or Category:Toy economics but I'll leave that to editors more familiar with toy articles than me.RevelationDirect (talk) 03:46, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Product catalog on Figma

I've attempted twice to remove the product catalog on Figma as a violation of WP:NOTCATALOG. Masters of the Universe merge

Problem: Recently, many Masters of the Universe articles have been proposed for deletion. It has been proposed that the articles that are up for deletion be merged with List of Masters of the Universe characters. However, the list currently only has a sentence or two for each character, and merging in a full article, even with a lot of information cut out, will disrupt the flow of the list.

Solution: I propose that the current list be moved, to either List of Masters of the Universe toys (this will be problematic because some of the characters on the list do not have toys), List of minor Masters of the Universe characters, or some other title, and we create a new list at List of Masters of the Universe characters that has more detailed information on the major characters.

Alternatively, we could leave the current list as is and create a new List of major Masters of the Universe characters. What do you guys think? --Cerebellum (talk) 15:17, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Toys articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Toys articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Mamod

In the course of browsing, I came across the article on Mamod, the manufacturer of scale model steam engines. Probably a little too enthusiastically, I began copyediting for a more encylopedic tone, removing what I thought was minutinae on design changes and trimming the number of pictures. The chief contributer to the page feels that I am removing important information for the collector and historian of the subject. I have given some explanation for my actions, but while I feel my judgement on content in the areas of Military history and aviation in generally accurate, I may be less equipped for editing in this area. Is there any guidelines for content of articles under this project, I can check? GraemeLeggett (talk) 12:42, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

As far as I know there are no specific guidelines for this project, but when I started out editing toy articles I looked at other popular culture projects, in particular guides on how to write about works of fiction like WP:MOSFICT. Things like, give context, background, details on the creation, as well as reception, impact and legacy, and not just descriptions of the works (toys) themselves. Since this is an article about a company, I would also look to Wikipedia:WikiProject Companies. To address this article specifically, there is no general WP:NOT exception for toy articles, which, like the rest of Wikipedia, should be encyclopedic and aimed at a general audience, not specialist enthusiasts. It's pretty common that a parallel wiki is created at wikia to house the most detailed material on toys, where enthusiasts aren't bound by Wikipedia's restrictions. This might be something that could be helpful here. Siawase (talk) 19:53, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

These two seem to be just basic variants of each other, a distinction which appears to be recognised mainly by hobbyists on technical grounds. I'm not seeing such a big gap between their origins and how they're used, and both articles suffer from under-sourcing. Does anyone have any objections to just merging the two articles? Scale models - not just toys

Hi wikipedians, I've just joined this Project due to my interest in scale models in general, and plastic military aircraft/ships/vehicles in particular (this is my hobby). I'm unsure if this is the right WP to manage scale model related articles, as most of them are not just/strictly toys (though can be used as toys for sure!), e.g.: collectibles, architectural models, promotional. So potentially scale models could be in the interest/scope of other wikiprojects... how to handle this? Interested in your ideas/feedback; to guide my collaboration. Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Thanks. — Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 09:46, 15 March, 2009 (UTC)

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Toys/Archive 1/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Toys.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Toys, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

The article Wheelie (Transformers) has been nominated at Articles for Deletion. See this article's entry at Wikipedia:Articles for Deletion/Wheelie (Transformers) (2nd nomination). Noah Kastin (talk) (🖋) 04:27, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

Oh, Wheelie?-🐦Do☭torWho42 () 04:31, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

The article Mechanical bank has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

completely unreferenced

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Request for a new assessment of the Microman page.

The subject says it all! The last time someone looked at the humble Microman page seems to have been back in 2011 according to this edit. I’ve spent some time restructuring and fleshing out content on the page and would like some other eyes—that understand the idiosyncrasies of maintaining toy related articles on Wikipedia—to look over the work and provide an assessment and some constructive criticism on the article. --SpyMagician (talk) 16:35, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

Need help with Microman and Micronauts

Since September last year, I've been attempting to cleanup and copy edit both pages and remove links to several unreliable sources (several fansites and the Transformers Wiki) but I've been reverted by SpyMagician every time and, unfortunately, engaged in an edit war ever since. I posted a message on SpyMagician's talk page explaining why the sources weren't reliable and explained the situation on the Microman talk page but didn't get a reply. 2A00:23C5:2E16:5701:68ED:47C1:DCC1:BA3A (talk) 17:22, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:58, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Barbie Fashionistas

 – Pointer to relevant discussion elsewhere.

Please see Talk:Barbie#Fashionistas line. Short version: major series of dolls, with 9 body types, lots of other diversity options, and a whole lot of RS coverage, since at least 2016. This looks like a good WP:DYK article for someone who focuses in this topic area. Given the amount of press coverage, it's actually kind of weird that the article is missing, and the topic doesn't even have a mention much less a section at Barbie (though it is mentioned at many Barbie-related articles, so there are plenty of places to link from when the article exists).  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  08:52, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
