- I joined Wikipedia in 2009 to create a page dedicated to my great-great-great grandfather, August Semmendinger. His last name is where my username originates. I think Wikipedia is the best thing ever.

My first page created, August Semmendinger, is an acknowledged conflict of interest article. This page was written by myself and my father, both direct descendants of August. I have worked hard since the initial edit to make sure each subsequent change has kept the topic objective and well-sourced. Luckily, most, if not all, of the article takes its roots from information found freely online. It was that information which was used in crafting the article and likely the reason it was never flagged for WP:COI despite an administrator early on noticing a link between the username and article name. I respect those early editors for acknowledging the lack of bias and ability to keep claims sourced and objective. The username Semmendinger was simply a result of making an account to watch that page. At that time, in 2009, neither my father nor myself understood much of Wikipedia, and indeed it was only recently in 2016 when I learned about WP:COI. It is in an effort of full disclosure that I acknowledge this conflict of interest here. |
