Image sources

[edit]

Please include the sources of images you upload, and remember to tag them! —Mulad (talk) 03:10, July 11, 2005 (UTC)

All apologies. Thanks for dealing with me in a polite way. :) Note to self: (this is what I use the most)

Fair use

[edit]

All material under fair use is copyrighted to begin with. Each material under fair use claim must include a reason for fair use. Please review our rationale for fair use.

  • {{Fairold}} - For use with images from old sources where copyright may have expired but not quite old enough for this to be certain, but where use would be contended to be fair use if still subject to copyright (eg, advertising from companies that have been out of business for 50 + years).
  • {{Fairuse}} - for a copyrighted image which is contended to be fair use.
    • {{Albumcover}} - for album covers
    • {{AustraliaGov}} - for works under Crown Copyright by the Government of Australia.
    • {{Bookcover}} - for book covers
    • {{Coatofarms}} - For images of a "Coat of arms" or crest.
    • {{Comiccover}} - for comic book covers (trade paperbacks and the like go under {{Bookcover}}, however)
    • {{DVDcover}} - for DVD covers
    • {{Gamecover}} - for video game covers of reduced quality.
    • {{Logo}} - for logos
    • {{Magazinecover}} - for magazine covers
      • {{TIME}} - for TIME covers
    • {{money}} - for images of the official currency of a country. These may be in the public domain, or they may not.
      • {{money-EU}} - for images of the official currency of the EU. These are copyrighted.
      • {{money-US}} - for images of the official currency of the US. These are ineligible for copyright, and therefore in the public domain.
    • {{Newspapercover}} - for newspaper covers
    • {{Philippines-fairuse}} - for images used under the fair use provision of Philippine copyright law.
    • {{Pokeimage}} - for Pokémon images
    • {{Poster}} - for poster images of reduced quality.
    • {{Promophoto}} - for promotional photos of people, e.g. headshots or posed shots
    • {{Screenshot}} - for screenshots of websites, software applications, films, television broadcasts and video games. Currently, no distinction is made between screenshots of proprietary programs and screenshots of free software. If the screenshot is of software showing a web page, then tag it with both {{software-screenshot}} and {{web-screenshot}}.
    • {{smithsonian}} - Images from the Smithsonian Institution
    • {{Stamp}} - for images of postage stamps which may or may not be in the public domain, depending on country.
    • {{USPSstamp}} - for U.S. postage stamps after 1978
    • {{Video tape cover}} - for video tape cover images
    • {{YuGiOhimage}} - for Yu-Gi-Oh! images
  • {{Fairuseunsure}} - for when use of a unique image that would be public domain unless contended to be fair use depending upon if it is subject to copyright, but the copyright status cannot or is difficult to be determined. A rationale should be provided to support this conclusion of why it cannot be determined and fair use. ie. Public domain unless fair use. [ talk ]
  • {{fairuseunknownsource}}, shortened to {{fuus}} - for images where the source is not known but image is claimed to be fair use regardless.
  • {{PAphoto}} - For images from PA Photos.
  • {{PermissionAndFairUse}} - where we have permission, and US fair use also applies. You should also describe as much as possible about the permission including who from and conditions.
  • {{Promotional}} - for an image freely provided to promote an item, as in a promotional photo in a press packet
  • {{unimage}} - for an image released by an agency of the United Nations.
  • {{Verifieduse}} - An approval process for fair use images has been proposed at Wikipedia:Fair use. Images which have gone through that process carry this tag.

Yay Fair use!!!!!!!!! Redwolf24 03:18, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

I have used Wikipedia and am starting to make a few contributions. I think I can add value in:

- Business - Rock Climbing - Flying - Michigan and related

I am still learning Wiki and plan to tread lightly until I am comfortable with proper Wikiquette.

Is this comment set up to go directly to your e-mail?

Best Regards, Ron Reed

K, we've been lacking on rock climbing. No it doesn't go to my email thhough while at my user page you can click E-mail this user. But that won't be neccisary. Also, please sign with ~~~~ rather than Ron Reed. It'll leave your name so users can reply easier. Redwolf24 03:17, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

User Page

[edit]

Redwolf24, your enthusiasm for this project is contagious, and I thank you for nudging me to create a user page. That's one of the little details I would have let sit undone for years. It's begun now (thanks to you) and hope to meet you again as we build this amazing resource together. Drop by anytime! -- ROYGBIV 04:55, July 11, 2005 (UTC)

Unanswered Questions

RE: Your Questions

I think I've answered them. See my talk page. Redwolf24 3 July 2005 06:41 (UTC)

Hi Redwolf,

My questions are repeated below. There weren't any answers on my Discussion page. If you feel the answers are on your pages somewhere then plase provide links to them -- there's no way to search your numerous answers quickly just as there's no way I can see to search Wikipedia for words or phrases that aren't actual entry titles.

Thanks in advance,

RE: Searching and Anchors

Hi Redwolf24, Thanks for the welcome. I actually joined Wikipedia a while back but hadn't logged in when I posted material. I wasn't sure why one even needed to log in, but now see that it allows users to follow the history somewhat more precisely.
My current question is how one can search ALL of Wikipedia for a specific name, term, phrase to find out what's available.
For example, if I wanted to search for Warren Burger, fomer Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, I'd probably find an individual listing for him. However, there might be no main entry for a person even though that person might be mentioned numerous times in articles about other things. And even if there is an entry for what you're looking for, there's no way to find all those other mentions unless links have already been established. Is there a way to do what I'm asking that I don't see?
I'm also wondering how to get the same effect as the HTML anchor code <a name="example"> which allows a user to jump directly to a specific spot on a page? Your command <div id="example">an id attribute</div> inserts a hard return <br> when one inserts it in the middle of text, forcing one to use it at the beginning or end of a paragraph. --Snsnews 3 July 2005 06:28 (UTC)

Back at it

[edit]

Hey Red, I finally made it back. Have you checked edit counts with Kate's tool lately? It still has me at 1515, which is where I was yesterday afternoon; that's way off from where I should be. Have we broken it with all our edit checking, or is it just me? -- Essjay · Talk 01:26, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

I've been at about 1020 for a while. Lemme check. Redwolf24 01:27, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
It says 1029. I'll check now if it says 1030. Redwolf24 01:29, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
Nope its the same. Looks like its broken. Redwolf24 01:33, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
I emailed "Kate" about it; we'll see what she says. Hopefully, it's just a temporary thing...Without my edit-count fix, I may have to enter rehab! -- Essjay · Talk 01:57, July 12, 2005 (UTC)
You can always go to Special:Contributions/Essjay, the old fashioned way. Redwolf24 02:00, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, but then I'd have to actually count them myself...I'm too lazy for that! -- Essjay · Talk 02:04, July 12, 2005 (UTC)
Nooo just do 500's until you get to the last page, then click 100 til you get to the last page. It gives you a good estimate. Like I found Im at around 1200 now Redwolf24 02:05, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
I count 1598...This is 1599, and I'll do 1600 before I stop to go to the grocery. -- Essjay · Talk 02:06, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

Hey, I haven't welcomed anyone you have in over 24 hours! I just caught her "personal sandbox" coming through RC! (Although I did list one of the users you welcomed at RfC for a questionable username, and I just retracted my welcome from the talk page of a GNAA troll who's after Zscout and Evil Monkey) -- Essjay · Talk 09:19, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks so much for the welcome note. I appreciate it. --Jfulkerson 02:50, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for leaving me a message.

BTW, could you look at the pages Gormenghast and Gormenghast (novel)? I've been working on it. However, the trouble is, it's about a series of books known as the Gormenghast Series. But the second book is also called Gormenghast. Uberisaac

K, I'll take a quick look. Redwolf24 08:25, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
I don't see the problem. Just write the plot for the second book at the novel page and for the series at the main Gormenghast page. Redwolf24 08:42, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
Thanks! Simple to you, but helpful advice to a newbie! Uberisaac

Images

[edit]

Another question (you've been helpful): Am I allowed to upload any images I find on Google to articles? I have been doing so, but I'm not sure about copyright. Uberisaac

Haha the whole image copyright thing drives me INSANE! Anywho look at this very talk page under Fair Use and use those tags on your images. If you're not sure about any of those just type {{fairuse}}. Redwolf24 09:44, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

WHOA! Hold on now. (I tried Red, I swear I did, but I just can't help myself!) If you aren't sure of the copyright status of an image, the best thing to do is to not upload it. Wikipedia can get into serious trouble if we violate copyrights. Fair use is an option, but only for certain types of copyrights, and if you're unsure, go to Wikipedia:Fair use and ask first. For the full image policy, see Wikipedia:Image use policy. -- Essjay · Talk 09:50, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

Pfffft. I'm not sure how Wikipedia could be sued for it considering its open content. All they'd do is get rid of the image. One thing I don't get is... it takes time and money to copyright stuff and the fact is, if National Geographic prints a picture of a Lemming, it doesnt mean they copyrighted it... Viva La Fair Use. Redwolf24 09:57, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

VIVA LA FAIR USE

But it doesn't take time or money to copyright; it takes time and money to register a copyright. Under US law, every original creation is automatically copyrighted to the creator, and there is no requirement that the creator do anything to register or otherwise protect the copyright. If you choose to register your copyrights, then you get additional protection (including stautory damages) but you still are able to protect your copyright and sue for actual damages without registration.

I know because I'm a co-owner in a publishing company (I put up the cash, my partner does the work) and we just met with our attorney about this not a month ago. -- Essjay · Talk 10:02, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

Awright. But see, your company isn't free content. See what if I were National Geographic and I put loads of pictures on Wikipedia and then sued them for it? It wouldnt really work out. Just tell them to take the picture off or at worst, sue the user. Redwolf24 10:09, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

I hunted you down a primer on it: Copyright Basics from the U.S. Copyright Office -- Essjay · Talk 10:06, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

It would be different if National Geographic actually put the pictures on Wikipedia. They would have to click the disclaimer box, and that would release their copyright. However, if you take someoneelse's pictures and upload them, they haven't released thier copyright. Sure, it's not likely they will sue (or even find out, for that matter) but there is still the chance, so it's always best to be very sure of the status of any copyrighted images.

Whatever photographer took the image for NG automatically received a copyright; he either released the copyright to NG or licensed the image. When you took it and uploaded it, you infringed on the copyright (unless they released thier images, which is highly unlikely.) In the unlikely event that they decide to sue (and who knows, maybe thier owned by Britannica, and are just looking for a reason to sue) they could do us some damage. That would anger Almighty Jimbo, and we'd all end up in WikiHell. All I'm saying is, be careful, and caveat uploader. -- Essjay · Talk 10:17, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

Man, I love that lemming more than life itself. I hope it doesn't get deleted. Redwolf24 11:07, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

OH GOD! I spend my offline life educating people, and now I'm educating them here! Why? Why do I do it? (Ok, enough of the melodrama.) I noticed that. Don't worry, your troll (at least, under that username) is permablocked. He won't be back. Mine, on the other hand, is only blocked for 24 hours, so I'm sure I'll see him again soon. The link to my "cult" page? (BTW, I went and added to your Barnstar proposal). -- Essjay · Talk 12:37, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

OH, I GET IT NOW. I thought "let me fetch the link" --> Redwolf24 meant "look at Redwolf24". You actually meant, look at the barnstar proposal. Now I feel dumb... -- Essjay · Talk 12:39, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

Haha. By the way, MathKnight CREATED the image from scratch. I told him about the whole award. Redwolf24 12:40, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I figured that out after I hit save. I knew he wasn't one of the ones chasing the horde. (And I have to tell you, every time I think about it, I get visions of you & NickBush being chased by a horde of viking pillagers, with me, Zscout, & Evil Monkey chasing them...) ; - ) -- Essjay · Talk 12:49, July 12, 2005 (UTC)
Damn them Norsemen hating on me and Nicko. Redwolf24 12:51, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

Alright, while the Norsemen are asleep, I'm going to go get some offline work done. I'm somewhere over 1800 now, in case you care, so we'll be doing an RFA soon...

I'll see you later, and by the way, if your lemming dies, I promise I'll get you a new one. -- Essjay · Talk 13:08, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

Hooray! I'm so glad your lemming was spared! Although, at some point, it has to commit suicide, doesn't it? -- Essjay · Talk 14:35, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

OK

[edit]

Sorry I accused you of cropping ... looking at Image:Lemming.jpg vs. the URL cited in the copyvio tag, it seemed that the source information had been removed. Probably it was simply absent in whichever version of the image you uploaded. Anyway, didn't mean to cast any aspersions on you. Happy editing! -- Visviva 13:00, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

No problem :) ah well I hope that lemming doesnt die but if its copyright its copyright. Redwolf24 13:01, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
Actually the copyvio tag was added by User:Head... I just happened by because I had watchlisted the image at some point (I can't for the life of me imagine why). Anyway, no harm intended. Carry on! -- Visviva 13:19, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
I went by your lemming and did a photo analysis on the talk page; I determined them to be similar but different images and removed the copyvio tag. As far as I can tell, they weren't listed on the copyvio page, so no harm, no foul. -- Essjay · Talk 17:52, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

Hello Jeffrey O. Gustafson.

Hello Redwolf24!

I see you got a lot of wikistress. May I ask why?

No, no, I haven't any. I have the red wikistress thingee there because it looks cool, mostly. I had an explanation under it, but now I've made it more clear so as to not send out any more false alarms.

Hello redwolf24,

I have heard that you are aplying for sysopship. Would you mind if I nominate you?Exir Kamalabadi(Talk)(contribs) 10:37, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

I'm VERY touched. However I want to wait until I make it to 2000 edits. When I am ready for nomination though, I'll drop you a note and you can be sure to vote a yes for me :) Redwolf24 10:47, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

That's darn right! If I have to wait to 2000, you do too! (Oh, and I want to be the one to nominate you!) -- Essjay · Talk 10:52, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Haha. Conomination. By the way the two of us oughta work more on ARTICLES as I see a lot of people being judged by their article edits. Redwolf24 10:54, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

I have plenty of article edits (I think)...Check User:Essjay/Significant Contributions -- Essjay · Talk 10:56, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

ESSJAY I JUST COUNTED YOUR EDITS, YOURE AT ABOUT 1970!!!! Redwolf24 10:57, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

I will vote for you whenever someone nominates you, Redwolf. (And Essjay too). :)Exir Kamalabadi(Talk)(contribs) 11:01, July 13, 2005 (UTC) PS. Essjay: leave me a message when you hit 2000 edits. I'll nominate you!

YAYYYYYYY! Exir, I'll leave you a note and you can be the second to vote for me, but I already promised Red that he could be the nominator. (Hence why I want to nominate him...) I'd better go start answering those questions!

As for articlespace edits, I have quite a few (the still broken Kate's toll says 299, and that was a couple days ago) and of those, many are full blown rewrites, because I do most of my editing in my sandboxes and with the preview button. I'd guess that if you added in my sandbox edits and preview use, I probably have somewhere around 750 articlespace edits. (Yeah, I use preview that much.) -- Essjay · Talk 11:12, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Hey, Red, I'm going to go out for a bit, but I'll be back shortly, and I'll finish up the road to 2000. Check out my gallery section; I made a new entry. -- Essjay · Talk 11:22, July 13, 2005 (UTC)
Haha, nice. I had something to say but I forgot it >.< Ah well. I'm off to work on albums! Redwolf24 11:26, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

Do you remember what the last edit was when you counted 1970? I've just finished some reworking over at my user page (I moved the gallery to a subpage) and I'm going to go do some welcoming and RCP.I should hit 2000 in the next ten mins. -- Essjay · Talk 12:40, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

No problem at all, you're my wiki-best friend. Anyways, I left links at the pages of Nickbush, evil monkey, exil, zscout, and talrias. Good luck, all we can do is pray :) Redwolf24 13:22, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

I saw some of the links (I have several of those people on my watchlist); thank you for that too. And I'm honored to hear you say I'm you WBF. I agree that all we can do is pray, so:

Almighty and Ever-Editing Jimbo, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks and praise...From age to age, you call your editors together, so that from East to West, a perfect Wikipedia may be created to your glory...Lord Jimbo, you said to your editors: I leave you peace, my peace I give you. Look not on my WikiSins, but on the good faith of my edits, and grant my RfA the peace and unity of your Wikipedia where you live for ever and ever...Deliver us, Jimbo, from every edit conflict, and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy, keep us free from POV, and protect us from needless anxiety...All this we ask in the name of the one Wiki, which is with you and with us, NPOV, forever and ever. Amen"

God I have too much information in my head, and too much time on my hands. (Every line in that is a paraphrase of the Mass.) -- Essjay · Talk 13:52, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Oh, they're saying such nice things about me over there! Do you think it would be tacky to add a "Vote for Me" link to my sig for the next couple of days? -- Essjay · Talk 14:12, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, but I was busy. I didn't vote at the very beggining. But now I voted for you essjay. Exir Kamalabadi(Talk)(contribs) 02:31, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

(Wiki)Stress

[edit]

Thanks for asking - it was (is) a combination of Wiki- and non-Wikistress. I was (am) stressed at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/William M. Connolley - it really bothers me that someone who I see as working really hard for the integrity of Wikipedia is being voted down because of the actions which were very much for the benefit of the project...in some cases by the disruptive users who are trying to insert POV material into Wikipedia, and in other cases because of an ArbComm decisions which I think was a totally inappropriate decision (since William was given revert parole in the absence of findings of fact against him by the ArbComm). Couple that with dealing with troublesome users and I was pretty much on edge when a bomb when off in my home country...terrorism is nothing but news until it hits a spot you know - my father walked past the place the bomb went off in what appears to be the interval between when it was placed there and when it went off. On the grand scheme of things it was small, but it was finally real. So after that I found myself losing it at a person who was an annoying editor, and I decided that I was too stressed to edit Wikipedia. So I took a day or two off...of course "time off" is probably more effective if yoiu stop watching your watchlist, but promising myself not to edit really put things into perspective. Things are far less stressful if you can't hit the [edit this page] tab :) Anyway, thanks very much for asking. Guettarda 13:39, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

No problem, I just troll that image and 'what links here'. Anyways as for William I'll vote for him right now. Anywho as I said, don't quit Wikipedia or you're letting the idiots win... I see you're British. Looks like your father lucked out. Anyways as for me, I look for the 'edit this page' tab when I'm at say... cnn.com >xD Anyways Hope you'll be/you are feeling better!!! Redwolf24 13:48, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
No, not a Brit - the flag was just a mark of solidarity. I'm from Trindiad and Tobago...we had out won little fun this week [1] Actually the most therapuetic things I couild do was RC patrol. Dealing with garden variety vandalism is fun with admin superpowers. Sure, it got my user page vandalised, but that's just amusing. Guettarda 13:54, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
Haha, I love my troll who messes with my page. Always entertaining how sad it is. Ha, I did a report on Trinadad and Tobago in school. Which one are you from? As for the RC Patrol, I look forward to doing it when I become an admin. But that won't be forawhile :)
Your friend,
Redwolf24
P.S, at RfA could you take a look at Essjay who I just nominated? Thanks.
I'm from Trinidad, but I am in Oklahoma right now. Times like this you feel like you should be home. I saw the conversation higher up on your page and followed the link to vote for him. All the best. Guettarda 14:06, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
Ah, good. I hope you vote for me when I RfA but thats not for a few weeks albeit. `Redwolf24

Thanks and a question

[edit]

Thank you for the welcome message. I do have a question. What is the difference between the page "User Talk: Neutron" where your message appeared, and the page "User: Neutron" for which there is no actual page? In other words when I log in, and click on my user name at the top of the screen, I get a page that says there is no page named "User: Neutron," but if I click on my talk, I get the page with your message. What is the diffrence?

Thanks for your help.

Since you're away at the moment, I got this one. -- Essjay · Talk 18:46, July 13, 2005 (UTC)
Haha, Essjay is my guardian angel it seems. Or stalker. Either one. Anyways I was sleeping. Redwolf24 23:54, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
Hummm. I do have many of the traits of a stalker...I'm going with WikiFriend, though, since I don't troll you, and I've now found hundreds of my own new users to welcome! Actually, my welcome template was messed up for about 75 welcomes today, and another user actually went through 50 of them and fixed it! I couldn't believe it!
Really, you're on my watchlist, so I see whenever your page gets edited; how else am I supposed to chase the horde of Norsemen after you? Oh, and by the way, don't think that putting that comment in small type over at the RfA made it any harder for me to see it! I know you were picking on the neutrals! Bad Red, bad! ; - ) -- Essjay · Talk 00:19, July 14, 2005 (UTC)
Haha, I felt the reason to be stupid as if we judge by time... why not make user Redwolf an admin? He may only have four contributions but they were in 2003... Redwolf24 00:23, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
I know...When I put my "please don't bite the opposers" note, I was thinking of TenOfAllTrades' RfA, where Everyking & Boothy443 were bashed into the ground for voting oppose;I was just having a little fun Red-bashing (not redbaiting, mind you). ; - ) -- Essjay · Talk 00:39, July 14, 2005 (UTC)
That's cause you're a commie :) Redwolf24 00:41, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

Making album articles

[edit]

For the future, try putting {{album}} on the talk page of the albums, so I won't have to to do them all. -- Mike Garcia | talk 02:09, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

Ok thanks Mike :) Redwolf24 02:12, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

To who it may concern

[edit]

I am 16 edits from 1,500 :) Redwolf24 03:22, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: GO GO GO GO GO GO GO! -- Essjay · Talk 03:47, July 14, 2005 (UTC)
Haha, 5 to go as of writing this. Redwolf24 03:52, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
You can do it! As of this moment, however, I'm doing deep breathing excercises...One of the Westboro Baptist Church freaks is quasi-harassing an injured Wikipedian; I just want to whack him with my Bible. -- Essjay · Talk 03:57, July 14, 2005 (UTC)
I read up on that godhatesfags thing a while ago. Makes me angry. Give Who a whacking stick, STAT! Redwolf24 03:58, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
What with being a theology scholar and a queer, they make me mad too. The guy who left her that message is Phelps' apostle in Harrodsburg, Ky; I have a good friend who is a professor at Centre College in Danville, Ky. who actually stood in front of that guy at a protest in town to block out his signs. Really, he's just an idiot, but of course, those are the kinds of people who give Christianity a bad name.

Three more to go! -- Essjay · Talk 04:15, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

Correction, one more to go. Redwolf24 04:16, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
Essjay, check your user page history :) Redwolf24 04:18, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
Oh, who is female. I think I called her a him. Ah well, not a big deal. Anyways yes I saw that Bart Guy. I should go do a nazi campeign and get my own WikiArticle >.< Redwolf24 04:29, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
Note: that was obviously a joke, I hate Nazis with all my heart. Redwolf24

Help

[edit]

Hi, I just can't figure out how to "sign my talk page." I made some minor contributions, but I don't have any idea where to go to put my signature! Since I was logged in, is it automatic? Thanks!
