Lof des Elephants
[edit]There seems to be a contradiction between the sections "Return to the Dutch Republic" and "Bibliography". When was his book Lof des Elephants first published? During his life in 1634 or posthumously in 1670? Rubenescio (talk) 23:07, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- Clarified - he "published" it first in Hirado in 1634 "at the Sign of the Quill" (meaning hand-written) - it was later printed by his son in 1670.
- Taffy (talk) 03:39, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- This leaves me wondering about his other book "Description of the River Nile in Egypt", was it ever published? Rubenescio (talk) 06:19, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- I don't know. He wrote it in 1635, but I suspect it was never printed. Taffy (talk) 10:08, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- Maybe this date could be clarified in a footnote? Rubenescio (talk) 10:20, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

A Swedish library seems to have a 1669 copy of this book. So the information about the publication in the article might be incorrect. Rubenescio (talk) 20:30, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
- The fact was restored to the article, it appears to cite a 2003 work. Was the author wrong, or the source misinterpreted? cygnis insignis 23:08, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
Religion
[edit]His parents were Protestants, was he a Protestant too? The Synod of Dort was held in his life time; if a Protestant, was he Calvinist, Remonstrant, or even Anabaptist? Rubenescio (talk) 06:47, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- He was almost certainly a Protestant, but of his denomination I can find no details. The only mentions of religion I have seen in his papers speak of planting de Christelijcke religie among the natives of Formosa - no more specific than that. Taffy (talk) 10:05, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- I have added "Protestant" to the infobox, or would "Christian" be better? Rubenescio (talk) 10:16, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
Pieter Nuyts was a Calvinist, no doubt, otherwise he could not become a governor or a burgemeester. See vroedschap. Catholics, mennonites and remonstrants were restrained in their careers, unable to get high ranking jobs in city administration or the national government. Taksen (talk) 21:08, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Name in Japanese and romanization of name in Japanese highly dubious
[edit]"ヌィッチ事件, noitsu jiken"
Why is ヌィッチ romanized as "noitsu"? This transcription is completely insonsistent. Some primary sources of that time would also be needed to prove that "Nuyts" was actually rendered in Japanese as "ヌィッチ". I am no expert in Dutch pronunciation, but I doubt that Nuyts/Nuijts is pronounced something like "Nitch" in English. --2003:F6:2717:DF00:6CAE:D0AB:4892:AF6E (talk) 18:02, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
