History

[edit]

The Assin Attandanso Resource Reserve is located in the Central Region,[4] approximately a 30-minute drive north of Cape Coast. Covering an expanse of about 15,400 hectares, this reserve is dedicated to preserving the rich biodiversity of the moist evergreen forest ecosystem. The topography of the area is predominantly flat, with some gently rolling hills found in the southwestern section. Over the years, a substantial portion of the reserve has undergone selective logging, with logging activities being carried out continuously from 1975 to 1988. As a result, the recently logged areas now feature a dense undergrowth, entangled vines, and the ongoing process of secondary forest regeneration. However, it's important to note that pockets of pristine, untouched forest still thrive in various parts of the reserve, safeguarding the natural beauty and ecological significance of Assin Attandanso.[5]

Assin Attandanso was designated as a Resource Reserve and entrusted to the care of the Wildlife Department, with Conservation International taking the lead in collaboration with funding from USAID. While the issue of poaching persists as a significant challenge, there is optimism that efforts to mitigate it will yield positive results in the near future.[5]
