Richard Hirschbaeck (German: Richard Hirschbäck; born 2 July 1937, Schwarzach St. Veit, died 13 July 2007 in Thumersbach, Zell am See) was an Austrian painter. He was co-founder of the Austrian artist group, Group 77.
Life and Work
Richard Hirschbaeck attended the Benedictine boarding school Edmundsburg in Salzburg. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, under Prof. Albert Paris Gütersloh from 1956 - 1961.[1] After his studies, in 1962 Hirschbaeck moved to Thumersbach, Zell am See where he lived until his death in 2007. In 1969, he joined the Austrian artist group Grazer Sezession[2] and in 1971, he became a member of the Artist's Association of Salzburg [3]. In 1977, Hirschbäck stepped out of the Grazer Sezession along with a group of artists and formed the Group 77 (Gruppe 77)[4] in Graz.
The vicinity to the Zeller See and surrounding mountains enabled Hirschbäck to study nature in relation to the urban environment, a main theme of interest present throughout his career. Hirschbaeck worked mainly with painting, oil on canvas and sometimes employed mixed media, assemblage and untypical, readymade objects, such as doors or windows as the basis for his paintings. He maintained a strict work ethic and painted daily. He was prolific in drawing and left behind thousands of works on paper in ink, pencil, aquarelle, tempera, oil and mixed media.[5] In the first years of his career, he was interested in geometric compositions and mathematically constituting the artistic work. In the seventies, he expanded the theme of landscape into the area of dreams, fantasy and fiction. Towards the eighties and nineties, Hirschbäck worked within the field of Abstract art, oscillating between expressionistic work and geometric compositions. The latter pieces dominated throughout the 2000’s. Hirschbaeck additionally combined his writings and poetry with his paintings, referring to literature and language, such as the Hebraic alphabet.[6]
In 1972, Hirschbaeck received the Art Prize Köflach followed by a retrospective in Neue Galerie der Stadt Linz Wolfgang-Gurlitt-Museum, today's Lentos Museum in Linz. [7]
His work is found in museum collections such as the Albertina Museum, Vienna[8], the Belvedere Museum in Vienna[9] and the LENTOS Art Museum in Linz.[10]
