Downtown Vancouver skyline in October 2005

Vancouver is the largest city in British Columbia, Canada. In Vancouver, there are 41 buildings that stand taller than 100 metres (328 ft). The tallest building in the city is the 62-story, 201 m (659 ft) Living Shangri-La.[1] Although this skyscraper far exceeds Downtown Vancouver's strict height limits,[2] the building represents the citys' efforts to add visual interest into Vancouver's skyline.[3] The second-tallest building in the city is One Wall Centre, standing at 150 m (492 ft) tall with 48 stories.[4] One Wall Centre has the distinction of being the first building in the world to use a tuned liquid column damper to control wind vibrations.[4]

Vancouver's history of skyscrapers began with the completion of the The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in 1939. The 111 m (364 ft) tall hotel was the first building to have stood taller than 100 m (328 ft) in the city.[5] Building construction remained slow in the city until the late 1960s. From 1968 to 1981, Vancouver witnessed its first building expansion. Many of the city's office towers were completed during this period, such as the Harbour Centre and the RBC Centre office towers.[6][7] A ten-year lull in building construction came after the expansion, however, beginning in 1991, and continuing into the present, Vancouver experienced a larger second building expansion.[8] As part of the city's push for Vancouverism,[9] many mixed-use and residential buildings were built, such as Concord Pacific Place, the largest master-planned residential complex in North America.[10] Vancouver also saw the completion of One Wall Centre and Living Shangri-La, the city's first buildings to break the 150 m (492 ft) and 200 m (656 ft) marks, respectively.[4][1] As a result of Vancouver's two building expansions, the city's population density is the 4th-highest in North America and the city has more residential high-rises per capita than any other city in the continent.[8] As of December 2008, the city contains 597 high-rise buildings that exceed 35 m (115 ft) in height.[11]

The tallest development that is under construction in Vancouver is the Ritz-Carlton Vancouver. The building, at 183 m (600 ft) tall with 59 stories, is expected to become the second-tallest building in the city.[12] The second-tallest building under construction in the city is The Private Residences. At 157 m (515 ft) and 48 stories, the building is expected to become the third-tallest in the city.[13] As of December 2008, there are 79 high-rises under construction, approved for construction, and proposed for construction in Vancouver.[11]
