Intellectual honesty

[edit]

Since you've assassinated the AfD, I've redirected the article to intellectual dishonesty. Again. I trust you will be willing to offer some assistance in the event that the alternative article's advocate comes along and reverts it. Again.--Jeffro77 (talk) 01:03, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know... User:Viriditas has replaced the redirect again with his version of intellectual honesty, on 26 December 2011. There is no point having both articles, but it is not clear how to get that through to him.--Jeffro77 (talk) 10:35, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Procedural Nomination

[edit]

Hello,

Could you please refer me to a description of what a procedural nomination is? I apologize for what you perceived as a disruptive question. I was simply asking for a definition of a term that you had used in the discussion. Thank you very much. Cullen328 (talk) 22:18, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is no direct policy definition of what a "procedural nomination" is, however the phrase is used all the time by nominators who do not personally endorse deletion, endorsing only that the AfD discussion should occur. Note that there is nothing in the Deletion Policy that actually requires the nominator to endorse a deletion outcome. This is quite common when a Deletion Review decision is to overturn and relist, or when a PROD is contested.
In the case of BangaBhasha, the consensus of the Talk page discussion appears to be that an AfD should be opened. The nominators rationale was not because of his or her personal opinion, but the result of a consensus. Hence the term "procedural" in this instance, it was the result of a procedure. -- RoninBK T C 22:37, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanation. Personally, I don't see why an editor would nominate an article at AfD unless that editor thought it should be deleted, or was helping a less experienced editor. However, I will respect precedent as you've described it, and will refrain from questioning such nominations in the future. Cullen328 (talk) 23:06, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Clearing out WP:Dead-end pages backlog

[edit]

Greetings, I see you also have been working on WP:Dead-end pages; my goal at this point (as you may see in the Talk page of the main portal) is to clear out existing backlogs so that the only WP:DEP listing will be the by-month lists, as opposed to various manually-updated lists. Of the alphabetical lists, I think we've cleaned out all but two sections, with some 700 articles left. Do you think we two, and whoever else, can knock those out over the course of this month? MatthewVanitas (talk) 07:12, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ooof, I dunno. I'll do what I can, but after going through about a dozen or so of those last night by hand, I was getting a little goofy. Any suggestions on a good automation tool for finding probable link targets? -- RoninBK T C 07:42, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, I've just been hand-jamming it. I really need to learn how to use AWB or whatnot. MatthewVanitas (talk) 07:51, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Dacia scope clarifications and disclaimer

[edit]

Hello! Given the potential for conflict and suspicions raised by the WikiProject Dacia , I added an important notice for scope clarifications and disclaimer in the intro section. If interested and willing, please review and provide any feedaback and suggestions you may have. Thank a lot! --Codrin.B (talk) 19:48, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think that outright dismissing articles on Dacomania and Protochronism seems a bit arbitrary. I'm not saying you have to embrace their content, but I think that there is a way to properly include the articles without giving them undue weight. I'd advise you to have a chat with the fine folks at Wikipedia:WikiProject Alternative Views, they might be better equipped to advise you on how to treat subjects like this without giving them undue weight. -- RoninBK T C 16:39, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Great advice! Thank you!!
You might also be interested in seeing what I pointed out in your AN/I case, where I expanded upon what I would consider a properly balanced approach -- RoninBK T C 17:37, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for the neutral view. Much needed. I fully agree with your points A very difficult project and subject ... How can involve Alternative Views project without being accused of canvasing? --Codrin.B (talk) 17:44, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'd just go ahead and leave a note on the Wikiproject Talk page, I get the strong impression that the person who brought the AN/I will accuse you anyways, but as long as your post is fairly neutral I wouldn't worry about it -- RoninBK T C 17:49, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Roninbk,

My issue is not with the Wiki project but with Codrinb's leadership based on his lack of neutrality regarding Dacia-related topics and his unfounded accusations on me that I am following a hidden agenda. I just can't accept someone like him to head one of our wiki-projects.

Andrei (talk) 18:06, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's all fine and good, and please notice that I stopped short of endorsing Codrinb's actions. But apart from the fact that Codrinb created the WikiProject in the first place, there is no "leader" of any WikiProject. Decisions are supposed to be made via consensus and just because the two of you disagree on certain things does not give you have the right to call for some kind of mutiny. -- RoninBK T C 19:05, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I understand. If that is so then I kindly request you or another administrator to stop Codrin's and Daizus' harassment of my map. I stand by my decision to support Ivan Duridanov's Dacian-Baltic linguistic connection and the labelling of the Carpi and Costoboci barbarian tribes as of Uncertain origin based on the Cambridge Ancient History. Codrin can have the map removed from the articles within the scope of his project if he desires but I want him to ignore me and my work from now on.

Thank you very much. Cheers, Andrei (talk) 19:24, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, I am not an administrator, I am merely a third party trying to help objectively resolve this. You guys can certainly agree to avoid each other if you so choose, but any enforceable block of each other would have to be a matter handled by admins, quite possibly the WP:ARBCOM if it gets extremely severe. -- RoninBK T C 19:42, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But can I at least block Codrinb and Daizus from editing my map (both the file and the discussion page)? To whom should I talk to? Andrei (talk) 19:48, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Best to ask for it in the current AN/I thread, and see how that goes -- RoninBK T C 19:51, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It appears the editing war is far from over: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Harassment_of_the_map_of_the_Roman_Empire_and_Barbaricum_in_125_AD_and_of_its_author

I now really need an administrator to intervene in this dispute. Andrei (talk) 20:42, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Added template for SuggestBot

[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.

We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.

We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 01:48, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. [edit]

Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon

Despite its wide reach, content on Wikipedia suffers from the bias of its editors: white, technically inclined, English-speaking men that live in developed, majority-Christian countries. This represents an alarming absence of voices in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

In an effort to change this, the Jake is organizing a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Saturday, May 6th, 1 - 5 pm. Our mission is to bring together diverse communities to participate in Wikipedia editing, and improve its coverage of queer people and women of color in the arts.

We will provide childcare, snacks, and tutorials for the beginner editor.

Bring your laptop, power-cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

RSVP at and stay tuned to our Facebook page for updates.

What: Improving Wikipedia's coverage on queer and women artists of color
When: Saturday, May 6, 1-5pm
Where: Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Art Building #132, 1915 NE Chelan Ln, Seattle, WA 98105
Who: People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate.
What to bring: A laptop and power cord. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affliated participants.

Art+Feminism

the meetup page
for Art+Feminism
.
Wikipedia is one of the most wide-reaching repositories of shared knowledge, yet a 2011 survey found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female, suggesting an alarming absence of voices. What and how information is shared is skewed by this gender disparity. To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is organizing a quarterly series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia's coverage of womxn artists of color.

This Saturday afternoon's gathering will focus on creating, editing, updating, and expanding pages for womxn artists from Latin America and the Caribbean. The Edit-a-thon will feature a talk by Dan Paz, Lecturer in the UW School of Art + Art History + Design, an artist, and an educator who explores the labor of digital imaging production as a collaborative site where the intersections of the image-idea and lived experience are produced and contested. Through videos, photography, and sculptural projects that query the ability of documentary processes to be manipulated—to be multiplied and replicated, stopped and started, rewound and advanced—Dan works within the impossibilities of absolute replication to question the very ability of the image to truly represent.

Everyone is welcome. Access to UW WiFi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants. All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required! Childcare, snacks from local businesses, and editing tutorials will be provided. Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

Wikipedia Day 2019 — curating images from Asahel Curtis and older Seattle photos

[edit]

First Hill, Seattle, c. 1903, showing intersection of Columbia St and Summit Ave, Seattle, a panorama built from three Asahel Curtis photographs.
In the Seattle area?

Tuesday evening, January 15, 2019, 6-9pm at Wayward Coffeehouse, 6417 Roosevelt Way NE #104, Seattle WA 98115

Wikipedia Day celebrates the anniversary of the founding of Wikipedia. This year in Seattle, Cascadia Wikimedians' celebration of Wikipedia Day will focus on a different closely related project: Wikimedia Commons, which (among other things) functions as the media repository for Wikipedia. When you see a photo or map in Wikipedia, or hear an audio clip, etc., it usually is hosted on Wikimedia Commons and "transcluded" into Wikipedia.

Wikimedia Commons is a mix of users' own works and curated third-party content, either public domain or free-licensed. Our event is a hands-on workshop in curating third-party content, mostly early 20th-century photos of Seattle and other West Coast locations.

Currently, Wikimedia Commons has two intersecting sets of older photos, one from the Asahel Curtis Photo Company and the other a more general set of Seattle images. At this meetup, we will celebrate the 18th anniversary of Wikipedia by further curating these images by the creation and addition of categories, adding ImageNotes where useful, linking other versions of the same photo, enhancing the descriptions, and identifying and correcting errors. User:Jmabel has already categorized over 1000 images and corrected several hundred wrong dates, misidentified buildings, and etc., but there is much more to be done.

For more information, please see Wikipedia:Meetup/Seattle#Wikipedia Day 2019 — curating images from Asahel Curtis and older Seattle photos.

Art+Feminism, Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Saturday, April 6th, 1-5 PM

[edit]
Art+Feminism
For more info see
the meetup page
for Art+Feminism
.
Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors were women. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of representation from women.

Let’s change that.

To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is continuing a series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia's coverage of womxn and gender non-binary artists of color.

Childcare, snacks from local businesses, and editing tutorials will be provided.

All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

Everyone is welcome. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants.

Please create a Wikipedia account before the event.

RSVP through this Facebook event link.

When: Saturday, Apr. 6, 2019, 1–5 PM
Where: Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Art Building #132, 1915 NE Chelan Ln, Seattle, WA 98105
Event Sponsors: Jacob Lawrence Gallery, School of Art + Art History + Design

Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon: Womxn Artists of the Pacific Northwest

Calendar page Jacob Lawrence Gallery — Calendar | School of Art + Art History + Design | University of Washington
When Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, 1 – 5 p.m.
Campus location Art Building (ART)

Description
  • Free parking is normally available on campus after 12pm on Saturdays.
  • Check the Gallery's website for information about getting there.
  • The ‘Big Four,’ or the four white male artists that comprised the Northwest School, were the subject of the famous 1953 LIFE magazine article, "Mystic Painters of the Northwest": Guy Anderson, Kenneth Callahan, Morris Graves, and Mark Tobey. Each of these artists have robust pages on Wikipedia. However, key female-identifying artists from this time such as Margaret Gove Cafferman — who Mark Tobey cited as an influence on his work — lack Wikipedia articles.[* 1] To help address the imbalance of representation on Wikipedia, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is organizing an Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon focused on female-identifying artists of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Childcare, snacks from local businesses, editing tutorials, books, and lists of artists will be provided.
  • All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required!
  • Everyone is welcome. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants.
  • Please create a Wikipedia account before the event.
