Flag controversy
On November, 2015, Tzuyu and her band mates appeared on Korean variety show, "My Little Television". The 16 year old introduced herself as a Taiwanese and waved a Taiwanese Flag. Rumours of her being an activist who supports Taiwan's independence from China escalated when China-based singer, Huang An, took to his SNS account about her actions while appearing on the variety show.[1] The Chinese media and citizens reacted angrily, took to various social platforms to criticize her. Soon after, Twice was cut off from Chinese television, Tzuyu was pulled off from her endorsement with Chinese smartphone vendor, Huawei. JYP entertainment was forced to suspend all activities in China due to the hate targeted at Tzuyu by the Chinese community.[2]
On January 15, 2016 JYP entertainment's president, Park Jin Young, took to his Weibo account himself to apologize to the Chinese media. Meanwhile, JYPE also released a video showing Tzuyu apologizing over her use of a Taiwanese flag on a TV show. The video drew international support for the 16-year-old as observers noted the video was made to appease fans in China. The Taiwanese community was shocked and infuriated at the treatment towards the young 16 year old, who appeared shaky and under duress in the video.[3]
The three front runners electing for Taiwan's president on the next day, January 16, 2016 released statements to support Tzuyu. Taiwan's first female president, Tsai Ing-wen, states that "A citizen of the Republic of China should not be punished for waving her flag and expressing support for her country,[Chou Tzuyu] has been forced to say the exact opposite of what she originally meant, so this is a serious matter and it has hurt the feelings of the Taiwanese people." Meanwhile, Eric Chu of the past ruling party in Taiwan, Kuomingtang(KMT), disapproves of the hate directed at the 16 year old too, stating that he was saddened by the video, and condemns the actions of Huang An and JYP entertainment. Taiwan's previous president Ma Ying-jeou also weighed into the controversy this morning, saying that she had no need to apologize. "She had done nothing wrong but was forced to apologize. I want to tell Ms Chou she has no need to do so, we support her."[4]
This incident gained international attention as the treatment of the China towards a 16 year old affected the mindset of Taiwanese voting for the next President of Taiwan the day after the video was released. Anger at Chou Tzu-yu's seemingly "forced" apology had further propelled Taiwanese voters into the arms of the DPP's Ms Tsai Ing-wen and her party's legislative candidates, which made Ms Tsai Ing-wen the next President of Taiwan. The DPP advocates keeping China at arm's length, in comparison with the Kuomintang's (KMT) Beijing-friendly stance. It was even believed that this incident could have an impact even greater than the 2004 assassination attempt on former president Chen Shui-bian when he was campaigning the day before the elections.[5] Soon after, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) , stepped in to defend Tzuyu. It stated that it is not wrong for her to hold a Taiwanese flag, showing her love for the country she was raised in. Furthermore, the MAC said it has lodged a strong protest with the mainland's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), urging it to pay a high degree of attention to the incident and to restrain its private sector, since it has seriously hurt the feelings of Taiwan's people and might further impact the development of cross-strait relations and also condemned Huang's move, saying that his personal behavior has adversely affected cross-strait ties. It called on the people on both sides of the strait to cherish the hard-earned friendly ties.[6]
