Chandre Dharma-wardana is a Sri Lankan-born academic and scientist. Educated at Ananda College and Royal College, he earned a B.Sc (hon) from the University of Ceylon in 1961.[1] As winner of the Government Scholarship for Science he proceeded to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge where he earned a Ph. D for a dissertation on quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics. After a period at the National Research Council of Canada, he returned to Vidyodaya University (now the University of Sri Jayewardenepura), Sri Lanka, then under the Vice-chancellorship of Ven. Walpola Rahula, in 1969. Prof. Dharma-wardana was the Vice-Chancellor of Vidyodaya University during the years 1974-1975. He was also a senior lecturer and subsequently Professor of chemistry in that University during relevant periods in 1969-1975. During this period he also held associate appointments with the Université de Paris, Orsay via the CECAM institute, associated with the French Atomic Energy Commission and the CNRS. He was also a director of the CeyLon Leather Products and Tannery from 1972 to 1974. Currently, he is affiliated with the National Research Council of Canada and the Université de Montréal, and works on various topics in the quantum theory and nanotechnology.

Fields of research

Professor Dharma-wardana has worked on a wide variety of scientific topics, where the unifying theme is the application of the quantum theory, usually to many-body problems.[2] His work focused on quantum theory, statistical mechanics and solid state physics. He has also done research into many-body theory and plasma physics, often in collaboration with François Perrot of the French Atomic Energy commission. Thus the construction of the classical-map scheme for quantum systems [3] is a ground-breaking work, leading to the formulation of the classical-map hyper-netted chain method (CHNC). This method has led to a new approach for the evaluation of properties of Fermi liquids. His previous work on the density-functional theory of dense plasmas [4] is now a well-established method in the field. It has led to the development of methods for the first-principles evaluation of the equation of state, and the transport properties of dense plasmas.[5] His contributions to the energy-relaxation of hot electrons in semiconductors and also in plasmas,[6][7] has presented a new direction in the theory of non-equilibrium states of two-temperature charged fluids. His paper elucidating the unusual thermal conductivity of clathrates still attracts many citations.[8] His contributions to surface science (e.g. reconstruction of the sulphur-passivated InP surface), nanotechnology, phonons in semiconductor structures, quasi-periodic systems [9] etc., are well known and are contained in over 200 research publications. Dharma-wardana currently serves as a Principal Research scientist at the National Research Council of Canada, and is a Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Université de Montréal, so also Whose Who, Canada.[1]

Contributions to development studies

Professor Dharma-wardana has also contributed to various aspects of Sri Lanka's antiquarian,[10] and development studies[11] in Sri Lanka. He is an author of many articles in Sinhala [12] and in English, published in the popular press, e.g.,.[13] He was responsible for initiating the degree in Development Studies (B. Dev.) at the Vidyodaya University in 1974, during his tenure as the Vice- Chancellor of the university. A website directed by Prof. Dharma-wardana, and dealing with Ethno-botanical issues has become well known among Sri Lankan field naturalists for providing Sinhala and Tamil plant names as well as sociological details, i.e., socio-botany.[13] The website on placenames has been of interest to a project on toponyms directed by the Royal Asiatic Society (Sri Lanka Branch).[14]
