In the past, Hexatomini has been considered a tribe of crane flies of the family Tipulidae, in the subfamily Hexatominae. Its genera are now generally considered members of the subfamily Limnophilinae, sometimes the tribe Limnophilini. Hexatomini is still used today by some authors.

Starý (1992)[1] pointed out a nomenclature conflict that resulted in using Limnophilini or Limnophilinae in place of Hexatomini or Hexatominae. This was reaffirmed by "Catalogue of the Craneflies of the World"[2].
