Anna Halman (known as Ania or Ania H. in media; June 21 1992 - August 21 2006, Kiełpino Górne, Gdansk) was a Polish student in Gymnasium nr. 2, Gdansk. On August 20 2006 she was the victim of a sexual assault in her classroom when the teacher was away. Five boys pull down her pants, gropes her and pretends to rape her while filming with a mobile phone. [1] The following day she committed suicide.
As a response to this, Polish Minister of Education Roman Giertych launched a Zero Tolerance school reform.[2] Under this plan, teachers would have the legal status of civil servants, making violence crimes against them punishable by higher penalties. The plan has also received criticism by psychologists stating that more severe punishments won't fix the real problem.[1]
