The Ensign N176 was a Formula One racing car designed by Dave Baldwin, and used by Team Ensign during the 1976 Formula One season.

Racing history

The team skipped the 1976 Brazilian Grand Prix, Then entered South Africa, United States West and Spain using the older Ensign N174 with New Zelander Chris Amon driving, Amon drove the new N176 at the Belgian Grand Prix but retired with an Accident, the car being flipped upside-down by an earth bank but the New Zealander emerging unscathed.[3] The New Zelander finished 13th at Monaco.[4] At the Swedish Grand Prix Amon retired when his suspension failed and it caused an Accident,[5] The New Zealander was replaced by Belgian Patrick Neve for France after Amon had still experienced bad problems after his crash in Sweden, Neve finished the race in 18th.[6] The New Zealander returned for the British Grand Prix and retired with a water leak,[7] At Germany Amon was running mid pack when the race was stopped after Brett Lunger (Surtees) and Harald Ertl's Hesketh both hit Niki Lauda's Ferrari. Guy Edwards's Hesketh managed to avoid the Ferrari. All three drivers stopped and tried to get Lauda out of the flames and they were joined by Arturo Merzario, who stopped his Wolf-Williams after seeing the wreck. Amon decided after the crash he had enough and refused to race.[8] He was replaced Austrian Hans Binder for his home race, The Austrian Grand Prix and retired with a broken throttle linkage.[9] Binder was replaced by Belgian Jacky Ickx for Holland but retired with Electrical glitches,[10] The Belgian finished tenth at the Italian Grand Prix.[11] Ickx finished 13th in Canada.[12] There was nasty accident at the United States Grand Prix East when the Belgian crashed the Ensign, head-on into the guardrail. The car split in two and caught fire but amazingly Ickx was able to hobble away with only a broken ankle and a few minor burns.[13] The team choose to skip the final round in Japan.

The Ensign team had scored no World Championship points during the year.

The N176 was replaced by the Ensign N177 for the 1977 season.
