OmniRom is a relatively new addition[1] to world Android Open Source Project derivatives. It involves a number of prominent developers[2] from the custom ROM world and aims to provide

  • A community orientated development process (users control direction of development)
  • First class support for nightlies (so bug reports will be accepted)
  • Strong Open Source focus
    • Patches will be GPL by default
    • Commitment to enhance any features taken from other ROMs
    • Upstream enhancements to respective projects
    • No only Android code OS (so native QT apps for example)

The new project is a reaction to the recent commercialisation of ROM project CyanogenMod.[3] The project provides Android 4.4 (KitKat) based ROMs for experimentation,[4] including support for the Galaxy Note II. Other devices supported include the Galaxy Note, Galaxy S3, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7, LG Optimus G, Galaxy S2, Oppo Find 5, Sony Xperia T.[5]

The developers have partnered with Oppo Electronics to have the custom firmware pre-installed.[6]
