Lithgow railway station is a regional railway station on the Blue Mountains Line of the NSW TrainLink intercity network, serving the town of Lithgow in the Central West area of New South Wales, Australia. The station has a single island platform; platform 1 is for 'Up' (towards Sydney) trains, platform 2 is for 'Down' (away from Sydney) trains, as is the convention in NSW.

History

The station is not the original station, this is located 500 metres down the line towards Sydney and is still in existence having been renamed Eskbank. East of Lithgow, the ten tunnels deviation opened in 1910.[1] replacing the original zig zag with a double track line with gentler gradients. In 1957 the line was electrified through Lithgow to Bowenfels, but Lithgow is the present limit of electric operations. At the same time a refreshment room opened on the platform, this closed in July 1990 being the last example in the state.[2]

The station exit was originally located on the footbridge at the eastern end of the platform until replaced by the present concourse in August 1991.

Nowadays, trains can terminate on platform 2 can reverse straight back towards Sydney using a cross-over at the near Eskbank station (some trains still do the reversing onto platform 1 to allow other freight and NSW TrainLink trains to pass through). The station is located in a cutting and is staffed and equipped with lifts for disabled access. The station is also served by a limited service to Bathurst, daily NWS TrainLink Country XPT services to Dubbo, the weekly Xplorer to Broken Hill and the weekly Indian Pacific train to Adelaide and Perth. NSW TrainLink road coach services operate to various destinations from the bus station in Railway Parade.[3]
