The Silence[1] are a fictional race of mysterious beings in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, voiced by Marnix Van Den Broeke. They make their first on-screen appearance in the episode The Impossible Astronaut, where they are not named, but instead are referenced in the credits and the BBC Doctor Who website.
Producer Steven Moffat created the Silence[2] to compete with other creatures in the past in terms of "scariness".[3] Matt Smith (The Eleventh Doctor) called the Silence "the scariest monsters in the Show's history".[4]
The BBC website reveals that "Silence" is the plural, and an individual monster is called a Silent.
Characteristics
The Silence are depicted as tall humanoids with bulbous heads and mouthless, bony faces, partly inspired by Edvard Munch's The Scream.[5] Their eyes are sunken within their sockets and the skin of their cheeks stretches to the point of their narrow chins. Their hands consist of a thumb, a long flipper-like finger and a small secondary finger. They speak in low, guttural voices though they have no apparent mouths, and are all dressed in black business suits.
Silence are only perceived while being viewed; they are instantly forgotten once a spectator looks away.[6] The Silence also use an energy discharge from their hands to obliterate someone, leaving behind only debris. While absorbing and discharging this energy, a depression appears where one would expect a mouth to be.
History
The Silence have apparently been present on Earth for hundreds of years, going largely unnoticed by the human race, as mentioned in the trailer for "Day of the Moon". Their resemblance to Munch's The Scream is not coincidental: according to Steven Moffat, although humans are not consciously aware of their existence, "subconscious awareness" of the Silence manifests itself in such works.[7]
In "The Impossible Astronaut", a Silent spies on the Doctor, Amy, Rory, and River in 2011 Utah, where the Eleventh Doctor dies at the hands of a mysterious astronaut. Another Silent visits the White House in 1969 and kills a woman named Joy in front of Amy Pond.
