It was created in 1542 for [[Thomas Butler, 1st Baron Cahir|Thomas Butler]] who was a descendant of [[James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormond]]. Descendants would later become Viscounts Cahir and Earls Glenarm. [[Cahir]] is a town in the [[Barony (Ireland)|barony]] of [[Iffa and Offa West]], [[South Tipperary]]. It is famous for [[Cahir Castle]].

==Earl of Glengall==
The title of Earl of Glengall was created in the Peerage of Ireland in 1816. The Earl also used the subsidiary titles of '''Viscount Caher''' (1816) and Baron Caher (1583), both in the Peerage of Ireland.

:* Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Glengall and 10th Baron Cahir ( 1775- 1819), was the son of the 9th Baron.
:* Richard Butler, 2nd Earl of Glengall and 11th Baron Cahir ( 1794- 1858). The titles became extinct at the death of the second Earl who was buried in the Church of Ireland church in [[Cahir]] ([[John Nash (architect)]]).
