Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company is an American beer brewing company founded in September 2003 in Kiln, Mississippi[1]. It is Mississippi's first package brewery since prohibition[1]. Its Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale beer won the 2006 Bronze Medal in the World Beer Cup, in the Specialty Beer category[1].

History

Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company was founded by Mark and Leslie Henderson[1]. Born and raised in Mississippi, the couple met in college and moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2000 to pursue careers in engineering. The first steps toward the founding of Lazy Magnolia happened one Christmas when Leslie bought Mark a homebrew kit because she couldn't think of anything else to get him. Mark only got to brew one batch of beer before Leslie took over the brewing operations leaving Mark to design new equipment, tools, and gadgets to make the brewing process go smoother. It didn’t take long for this hobby to take over their house and all of their free time. They were brewing twice every weekend, and were giving away almost everything that they brewed to friends. The house was completely taken over with 5-gallon glass jugs, copper heat exchangers, and bubbling buckets of beer as they explored dozens of variations on their own special recipes.

Friends and family were so impressed with the homemade creations that they encouraged the couple to go pro. Many even offered to invest in such a venture. At this point Mark and Leslie started doing some serious research to answer some basic questions about the legal status of breweries in Mississippi and the potential market for specialty beer in the state. Much to their surprise, all answers came back positive. The time seemed to be ripe for Mississippi to join the rest of the nation in the craft beer revolution.

Leslie entered the American Brewers Guild Brewing School in July 2003 and followed this up with an apprenticeship at Crescent City Brewhouse in the spring of 2004[1]. During this time, Mark was hard at work developing a business plan, performing market research, designing logos, securing financing, and searching for just the right location for the company. Leslie worked on recipe development and searched the nation for high quality brewing equipment to scale up the recipes from 5-gallons to 500-gallons per batch.

The schedule progressed rapidly after Leslie’s internship. A building was secured in September 2004, the brewing equipment was delivered in October and fully set-up by December[1]. The dream became a reality in January 2005, when the first batch of beer was brewed on the Lazy Magnolia system[1]. The first kegs of beer hit the market on the Gulf Coast in March 2005[1]. Hurricane Katrina briefly shut down operations and destroyed the couple’s home when it hit in September 2005, but beer was flowing again by October[1].

Products

Lazy Magnolia's Southern Pecan beer.

Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale

Lazy Magnolia's Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale beer is the first beer in the world commercially made with whole roasted pecans. The company only uses locally produced pecans. The pecans are used just like grain and provide a nutty characteristic. The company didn't think this union of pecans and beer would be possible because of oil released by the pecans during brewing but they soon found out that the yeast used in the brewing process broke down the oil thereby actually enhancing the product.[2]

Reb Ale Deep South Pale Ale

Reb Ale was Lazy Magnolia’s first recipe designed to recognize a specific location and demographic, Oxford, Mississippi - home to the University of Mississippi whose mascot is the Ole Miss Rebels hence the Reb Ale name of the beer. This beer was the company's "thank you" for the support of Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company by the people of the area and alumni of the University.[3]

Indian Summer Spiced Wheat Ale

Indian Summer Spiced Wheat Ale is an American-style wheat ale spiced with orange peel and coriander. It has a distinct citrus note without being overly fruity.[4]

Jefferson Stout Sweet Potato Cream Stout

Jefferson Stout Sweet Potato Cream Stout is called by Lazy Magnolia "the ideal Southern-style Stout". This beer is brewed with sweet potatos and lactose (milk sugar). It also has added notes of roasted chocolate, coffee and caramel flavors.[5]

Southern Gold Golden Honey Ale

Southern Gold is Lazy Magnolia’s golden honey ale. It is brewed with locally produced honey from Ellisville, Mississippi. It is the company's second recipe designed to recognize a specific location and demographic, Hattiesburg, Mississippi - home of the University of Southern Mississippi whose mascot is the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, hence the Southern Gold name of the beer.[6]

Packaging

For public purchase, Lazy Magnolia beers are available in 12 ounce glass bottle 6-packs, half gallon bottles and the keg-like Party Pig[1]. For commercial purchases, such as for use in restaurants, Lazy Magnolia beers are available in standard 5.16 gallon and 15.5 gallon stainless kegs[1]. The beer is bottled or kegged and self packaged at Lazy Magnolia's brewing facility[1].

Availiability

Lazy Magnolia beers are distributed throughout Mississippi and can be found at select locations in Tennessee, Alabama and Florida[1]. Many grocery and convenience stores in these areas carry Lazy Magnolia beers as do many restaurants[1]. Several bars also offer the beers in bottles and on tap[1]. Lazy Magnolia beers are distributed by fourteen independent wholesalers in the four-state availability area[1].

Other business

Lazy Magnolia offers no-reservation tours of the brewery every Saturday morning at 10:30 AM. It also sales both online and at the brewery non-alcoholic merchandise such as t-shirts and tap handles[1].

You can also try Lazy Magnolia's beers at The Lazy Magnolia Brew House and Restaurant at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport in Gulfport, Mississippi[1].
