Once a mighty general in the [[Spartan]] army, Kratos was feared and renowned as an awesome and terrifying fighter. In one pivotal battle against barbarians he was nearly defeated but called upon the God of War, [[Ares]], to save his life in return for his servitude to the god. Ares did just this and fused the [[Blades of Chaos]] to his arms allowing Kratos to defeat his foe. After that battle Kratos won many battles for Ares but the God of War, wanting to turn his servant into a perfect warrior with no ties to the living, tricked Kratos into killing the only thing in the world he loved: his wife and daughter. Enraged by this treachery, Kratos pledged himself to the service of the other gods of [[Olympus]], particularly [[Athena]], biding his time until he can have his revenge on the war god. |

During the events of ''[[God of War]]'', Kratos is charged by Athena with defending her patron city of [[Athens]] from Ares; Kratos agrees not only for the opportunity to revenge himself upon Ares, but the chance to be forgiven of his sins and be rid of recurring nightmares of slaying his family. Sent to seek out the power of [[Pandora's Box]], Kratos succeeds, only to be slain by Ares while trying to return with the Box to Athens. Fighting his way out of [[Hades]], the realm of the dead, Kratos reclaims Pandora's Box from Ares at Athens, and uses its power fight and kill the God of War himself. Athena rewards Kratos with forgiveness, but cannot free him of his nightmares, and Kratos attempts to commit suicide rather than live with his pain and remorse. In ''[[God of War II]]'' Kratos, having become too powerful for Zeus' liking, is betrayed by the father of the gods, who steals Kratos' godly power and kills him. However, Kratos is saved from Hades by [[Gaia (mythology)|Gaia]], one of the [[Titans (mythology)|Titans]] who were the predecessors of the Greek gods; imprisoned in Hades after being overthrown by their progeny, the Titans seek Kratos' aid in gaining vengance upon the gods. Gaia guides Kratos to seek out the [[Three Fates|Sisters of Fate]] and take from them the power to travel back in time to Zeus's betrayal. Kratos nearly defeats Zeus, but Athena intervenes at the last moment and takes the fatal blow meant for Zeus. In her dying words she informs Kratos that if Zeus is killed, Olympus will also be destroyed. She reveals that Zeus feared Kratos would repeat the cycle of the son killing the father, as Zeus did when he overthrew his father Cronus. Tired of the gods' petty manipulations, Kratos uses the Fates' power to bring forward the Titans from the time of their original war with the gods, and joins them in an assault on Mount Olympus while Zeus is still weak from his battle with Kratos, to destroy the gods once and for all. The outcome of this battle has yet to be revealed. |
