Durgapur Expressway (part of NH16) is a 68-kilometre-long (42 mi) 6-laned expressway in West Bengal, India, which connects the state capital Kolkata with the city of Durgapur. Approved in 1986, it is first expressway of West Bengal and fully became operational in 1997.[2]
History
Durgapur Expressway is the first expressway of West Bengal. In 1986, Government of India approved an expressway between the cities of Kolkata and Durgapur. Two highways were commissioned namely Durgapur Expressway and Panagarh-Palsit Highway. Following NHAI tendor, the both highways were constructed by Malaysia based Gamuda Berhad.[3] It was built as a two laned road.
