The group, with Esbjörn Hazelius, Gideon Andersson and Dag Westling, was formed back in 1993 and with its fantastic interplay in the Irish tradition has been – and is – role models for many other Swedish groups in the genre. On ''Apples in winter'', the trio offers 13 traditional songs, exquisitely arranged both instrumentally and vocally. I have previously in other contexts praised Esbjörn Hazelius for his beautiful voice, but here he is "only" one of three. Just listen to "Diggers" where they join a cappella to subdued bodhran, or the beautiful Robert Burns poem "The Captain's lady". This is musicianship that is contagious.

|quote= After an almost ten-year hiatus, the band Quilty is now making a comeback, Sweden's foremost interpreter of Irish traditional music. The long break with their own musical projects has certainly done the musicians good and given new inspiration. For example, Esbjörn Hazelius has made solo records and toured with Hazelius Hedin. The new record is well produced, the expression is airy, light and with a clean and pleasant sound image that is not overloaded with heavy drum and bass accompaniment. Quilty is on the other side of the globe from the breezy pub music interpretations of Irish folk you sometimes hear. The trio, Esbjörn Hazelius, Gideon Andersson and Dag Westling, offer genuine musicianship and occasionally fine elements of vocal singing. The texts are like time documents that tell something about how life was in the past. Most of it is Irish traditional, but here there is also room for American, as in the bluegrass song "Charming Betsy", where the trio excels with their stringed instruments as if it were a game. For me, it is the ballad "In my prime" that rises above all the others with its fine-tuned fragility, but the album as a whole is really successful. Welcome back Quilty!

Quilty is a Swedish folk band specialising in Irish folk music.

Formation and history

The group was formed in 1993 and consists of Gideon Andersson, Dag Westling, Esbjörn Hazelius[1] and Staffan Lindfors.

Quilty's debut album was A Drop of Pure (1995), which was followed by I'm Here Because I'm Here in 2001.[2] After gap of almost ten, the group released their third album Apples in Winter on March 13, 2015.[3] The release party was held at Nalen in Stockholm as a sort of pre-party event for the Folk and World Music Gala.[4] Several of the group's concerts have been broadcast on Sveriges Radio.[2] In 2018 in connection with the group's 25th anniversary, bassist Staffan Lindfors returned after a long absence. In 2019, Quilty launched their new project, Out on the Ocean, with songs related to the sea. A new album has been recorded at the live concerts in autumn 2019 and spring 2020 with the title Out on the Ocean, shortly before all touring activities stopped due to the Covid19 pandemic. The album was released in the spring of 2022.
