American hip hop supergroup ¥$—composed of American rapper Kanye West and American R&B singer Ty Dolla Sign—are scheduled to release their debut studio album sometime in 2023. The release had been teased throughout 2023, with several listening events and concerts being planned in promotion of it, all being cancelled. "Vultures" was released on November 22, 2023, as the first single from the album. The album's tracklist was revealed on December 8.
Background
On September 26, 2023, Forbes reported that West was "hard at work on his next album" and it would be "dropped sometime soon, potentially without warning."[1] Later that month, TMZ detailed a West collaborative album with Ty Dolla Sign, ready for release "now".[2] Ty Dolla Sign and West had previously collaborated on several songs, including "Only One" (2014), "Real Friends" (2016), "Ego Death" (2020), and most recently "Junya Pt 2" (2021).[3] On October 13, 2023, Billboard reported that West was planning to release a collaborative album with Ty Dolla Sign and was shopping it to record labels, who had previously distanced themselves from West due to previous antisemetic comments.[2] Universal Music Group, parent company of Def Jam, West's previous label, stated that they were no longer working with him.[4] In October, West and Ty Dolla Sign alongside other artists were spotted in recording studios in Italy. A joint concert at RCF Arena in Reggio Emilia, Italy was reportedly planned for October 20, but was delayed to October 27 before being cancelled.[5][6]

On October 22, Ty Dolla Sign posted a tweet containing the symbols "¥$". In an Instagram post on October 23, Ty Dolla Sign confirmed the collaborative album's existence. He also announced a "multi stadium listening event" to be held on November 3 in promotion of the album, similar to listening parties West hosted during the release of Donda. The post contained a black background with white text that displayed the "¥$" symbol.[8][9] Leading up to the events, West and Ty Dolla Sign were spotted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, leading some fans to speculate that the events would take place there.[10] The events were cancelled, with the duo's plans to release the album that night being scrapped.[11] Fans likened the repeated delays and cancellations to Yandhi, a previously scrapped album by West.[12]
During a performance in early November 2023, Ty Dolla Sign stated that he had just flown in from Saudi Arabia, where he was working with West on their upcoming album. He said "I just landed on a flight from Saudi Arabia, I've been out there recording a part of my album with my brother Ye, and that's coming real soon."[13] Videos of the two recording with American rapper Lil Baby in Saudi Arabia also surfaced online.[14] Images were released on West working in a "desolate setting surrounded by little except chairs and tents" were released as well.[15] British musician Fred Again played snippets of a song featuring West and Ty Dolla Sign at a club, seemingly from their collaborative project.[10] On November 17, DJ Pharris previewed the song "Vultures" by West and Ty Dolla Sign on his radio show, WPWX Power 92 Chicago. The song was later released on November 22, marking the first collaborative effort by West and Ty Dolla Sign as ¥$.[16]
