On November 22, 2023, a car exploded at the Rainbow Bridge border crossing in Niagara Falls, New York along the Canada–United States border, killing at least one occupant of the car and injuring a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer.
Background
The bridge was officially opened to the public in 1941 and does not permit commercial trucks.[1][2] The explosion occurred one day before the American observation of Thanksgiving, a period of heightened travel in the United States.[3]
Explosion
On November 22, 2023, at approximately 11:22 a.m.,[4] an unknown-modeled vehicle exploded at the Rainbow Bridge.[5] According to several law enforcement sources, the vehicle entered from the United States portion of the bridge at a high speed.[6] Eye witnesses stated that the vehicle crashed into the checkpoint structure at high speed, resulting in a fire and explosion.[7]
Aftermath
The Buffalo Niagara International Airport increased security checks[8] and shut down departing and arriving flights.[9] The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission closed all four border crossings in the Niagara Falls area—Rainbow Bridge, Peace Bridge, Lewiston–Queenston Bridge and Whirlpool Bridge.[10] Amtrak temporarily suspended their cross-border services between New York and Canada.[11]
The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is coordinating its response with the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.[12] The Joint Terrorism Task Force and New York State Police are monitoring all points of entry into New York.[13]
Investigation
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Canadian officials are investigating the incident.[14]
According to Reuters, a preliminary assessment determined that the explosion was likely caused by a reckless driver.[15] No explosive devices were immediately found, according to The New York Times.[16]
CNN reported that although initial reports indicated two deaths in the car, the authorities were no longer sure of how many people were in the car at the time of the explosion and it may only have been one person.[17]
Reactions
United States
The White House is "closely monitoring" the incident.[18] President Joe Biden was briefed according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre;[19] Biden was in Nantucket, Massachusetts for Thanksgiving.[18] Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg was briefed about the explosion and spoke with Canadian Transportation Agency chair France Pégeot.[20]
Canada
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told lawmakers that the explosion was a "very serious situation".[21] Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc is receiving information from U.S. authorities, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and border service agencies.[10]
