Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor (born 4 June 2021) is the daughter of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. She is the eleventh great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and is eighth in the line of succession to the British throne.[1]

Birth and family

Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor is the second child of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. She was born at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California, on 4 June 2021 at 11:40 PDT (18:40 UTC). She is named after her paternal great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, whose family nickname is Lilibet,[1][2] and paternal grandmother, Diana, Princess of Wales.[3] Her nickname is "Lili".[4]

Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor descends paternally from the British royal family. She has mixed-race ancestry.[5] Mountbatten-Windsor has dual nationality of the United States and the United Kingdom.[6]

Title and succession

Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor is eighth in the line of succession to the British throne and is the most senior individual in the line to be born overseas.[6] Akin to the decision her parents made for her brother Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, it is unlikely that she will have a title.[7] Under letters patent issued by King George V in 1917, she is entitled to become a princess upon the accession of her grandfather, Charles, Prince of Wales.[1] In the 2021 television interview Oprah with Meghan and Harry, conducted before her birth, the Duchess of Sussex said that she had been told that changes would be made to remove that entitlement as part of Charles's reported plans for a slimmed-down monarchy.[8] The Prince of Wales desires a scaled-down royal family and has been privately lobbying for it, long before Harry and Meghan's relationship.[9][10]
