Kevin Paffrath (born January 28, 1992), also known as Meet Kevin, is an American YouTuber and real estate broker.[2][3] Paffrath started posting regularly to his YouTube account in 2018, posting videos discussing real estate, stocks and airline points.[3][4] He has been cited as a leading "landlord influencer," primarily to small-scale and do-it-yourself investors. [5][6]
In May 2021, Paffrath announced his candidacy for Governor of California in the 2021 California gubernatorial recall election as a member of the Democratic Party. In doing so, Paffrath became the 26th person to officially enter the race.[2][7][8]
Paffrath's platform includes no state-income tax for the first $250,000 of income, combining 70 percent of high schools and colleges, legalizing online gambling, implementing a carbon tax, and prioritizing legal immigration.[9]
Early life
Paffrath was born in Germany. His parents immigrated to the United States in 1993 when he was one year old, first to Florida and later to California. As a teen, Paffrath wanted to work in law enforcement, and participated in a law enforcement explorer program.[10] During that time, he spent over 3,000 hours riding alongside local police officers.[11] Paffrath has stated that in his youth he assumed he would become a police officer, but one of the officers he rode with told him about his side job as a realtor, which caught his interest. Paffrath received his real estate license when he was 18 years old.[10] In 2010, he and his future wife bought a condemned house and fixed it up, then began renovating additional homes and renting them out.[11] They currently own 22 properties in southern California.[10] His net worth was estimated at $20 million in 2021.[12]
YouTube career
Paffrath's YouTube channel, Meet Kevin, began in September, 2010.[13] The channel focuses on real estate investing, economics, and politics and reached 1 million subscribers in December 2020 and over 1.6 million as of May 2021.[14][15]Template:Date=May 2021 His regular guests have included Kevin O'Leary, David Pakman, and Peter Schiff. Paffrath frequently interviews executives of major corporations on market and technology trends, including Frank Giustra and Cathie Wood. In November 2020, his channel and path to real estate success were featured on CNBC's Millennial Money.[16][17]
Controversy
Kevin Paffrath has been sued twice for YouTube videos he made discussing the business practices of radio personality Dave Ramsey and businessman and author Grant Cardone. In court documents, Paffrath stated that he ended his relationship with Ramsey Solutions before making the videos, and therefore did not violate a contract. Paffrath also claimed that Ramsey was upset simply because his YouTube videos mocking Ramsey were successful.[18] The lawsuit was dismissed.[19]
Paffrath has made numerous YouTube Videos "exposing" Grant Cardone's business model. In one video, in an effort to bring more attention to his other "expose" videos, Paffrath delivered flowers to the employees at Grant Cardone’s office. Paffrath was subsequently sued by Grant Cardone. The lawsuit was dismissed. Paffrath was charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct, but those charges were also eventually dismissed.[5]
California gubernatorial candidacy
In 2021, Kevin Paffrath announced that he would be running for Governor of California; running as a Democrat. Paffrath has a 20-point-plan outlined on his campaign page.[20] Early on in Paffrath’s campaign for Governor, Instagram removed his campaign announcement post. Paffrath claims that Instagram had a post taken down after he suggested the incumbent might be a "weanie baby."[21] Paffrath suspects the post was taken down intentionally and points out that Instagram through Facebook donated over 30 million dollars to Gavin Newsom's campaign.[22] Hours after Fox News inquired about the missing post, a spokesperson for Facebook, which owns Instagram, said it had been removed erroneously and that it was restored once the error became apparent.[21]
