Wikiversity : Your Free University

Announcements

Hurrah: Someone has proposed opening the university on a provisional basis and has volunteered to teach the first class. For information please visit the discussion page.

Note: If you are going to create a course be sure to fill it in. I know it takes time, but don't create a page and leave it blank. If you're going to create something, then fill it with some kind of helpful info. --OMouse

Courses vs Text books: When creating a course, do not try to write a text book. You will be simply doubling up on another Wikibook, and probably what is included in the Wikipedia. Instead, try to write classes. Be sure to read the Vision behind Wikiversity, and how to include alternative approaches. One model to follow is the following: a short introduction about the topic, raise a few points about alternatives, but make sure you ask questions of your readers (quizzes, short answer, perhaps even essay questions). This means your course has become a course, and is not simply a replica of information found elsewhere. Invite your readers to explore the web for resources (you can give them a few links to start off with) and add to the page. Just remember, text books are great - but that's not a university. About the Wikiversity

Wikiversity is a wiki-based learning community. Here you can use online courses and also create courses yourself. See this page for some ideas about what the Wikiversity might become.

Different entry points and rough theory, as well as example forms are also available.

Discussing the Wikiversity

For previous discussions see the metapage on Wikiversity. For now it's better to keep discussions centralized at Wikibooks. In the future we might utilize a #wikiversity IRC channel as well. Add your name to the participants list.
