Sync with Wikitravel?

edit

Thanks a lot for being active and adding content! But please read Wikivoyage and Wikitravel. Syncing with Wikitravel is questionable, and adding stub articles about little villages is not a good idea, if there's nothing more to add. Unless you believe there is enough potential content to fill out a Wikivoyage:Small city template, please don't start a stub about a village. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:37, 16 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Ok, sorry 'bout the stubs. The sync is not questionable, since it's the content I put there yesterday, and then I found out about wikivoyage (which I will probably user more in the future :) )... Andree.sk (talk) 07:50, 16 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

OK, that's cool. Still good for you to know about the background between the two sites, though. And welcome! Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:00, 16 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Copyleft policy

edit

Hi, Andree.sk. I regret that I have to delete the Malá Fatra article because no-one gave credit to w:Malá Fatra when copying lines of text from that article verbatim. It's usually a bad idea to do that, anyway, because it's generally more appropriate to summarize and/or paraphrase, but in any case, it's a violation of Wikipedia's Creative Commons license and Wikivoyage's Copyleft policy to copy content verbatim from any source, even a sister site, without crediting the source.

I'm copying the entries you created that don't seem to be copied directly from anywhere and posting them below, to make it easier to recreate an article about this mountain range:

  • 1 Terchová. A tourist center of Malá Fatra, birth place of "Juraj Jánošík" - a famous Slovak highwayman.
  • 1 Veľký Rozsutec (Most common access is from village Štefanová or Terchová, following a ravine, continuing around Malý Rozsutec and up. Usually approx. 2.5-3h hike up.). One of the most picturesque Slovak mountains, with great views.
  • 2 Vrátna dolina (Follow the road from Terchová). A valley, which is one of the most visited tourist and ski destinations in Slovakia.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks again for being so helpful. Please have patience; it's totally understandable for any new Wikivoyage user to trip on some policies now and then. I did, too.

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:21, 19 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

hi! please copy here the whole article, I'll rewrite whatever is needed, but I sure ain't gonna write it again from scratch, I value my time more than that.

Andree.sk (talk) 06:03, 19 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

The rest of it was all copyvio from the Wikipedia article, so you can find it there once more. By the way, your participation has also been requested at Talk:Slovakia on choosing the most user-friendly way to divide the country into regions on this site. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:29, 19 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
I hope you're not losing patience with me or other longer-time users who are cramping your style. The entire lifeblood of this site is users like you who add content! But copyvio policies aren't a place where corners can be cut; they're subject to potential lawsuits. And changes to the regional structure of countries are the kinds of edits that need discussion. Of course I realize that you were merely providing a table of traditional regional divisions of Slovakia, but having that plus the current regional divisions seems confusing to me. But I really don't want you to decide we're wasting your time and stop editing here. I can back off a little for a while, if you like, though not on basic things like copyvio policy, but I can't say what others will choose to do. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:38, 19 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
A bit - it's quite a cold shower to find reverts (instead of "Thanks") in the morning, after 4 hour wikiediting :)) I mean, I posted to multiple projects (but software ones mostly), so I know a review process is useful and needed often. But are you sure it was all copy? Perhaps I copied the one introductory sentence (which cannot be rewritten too much), I don't recall unfortunately, I did quite some work yesterday. Please do copy it here, if even possible. I'll add references to wikipedia or whatever, but I don't want to refigure it all out - really, I've got better things to do (and I'm sure you too). TIA, Andree.sk (talk) 06:41, 19 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
I understand. And yeah, I sure do have other things to do. Well, here's the Wikipedia article. As I recall, the parts you copied were:
Malá Fatra (Slovak pronunciation: [ˈmalaː ˈfatra]; also Little Fatra or Lesser Fatra, Polish: Mała Fatra) is a mountain range in the Western Carpathians in the north-west of Central Slovakia.
It is situated approximately between the cities of Nitrianske Pravno, Strečno, Martin and Zázrivá. Turčianska kotlina (Turiec Basin) and the Oravská vrchovina Mts. are situated to the west of the range, and Žilinská kotlina (Žilina Basin) and the Kysucká vrchovina Mts. is located to the east.
You might have copied more; I don't recall. I would suggest making this less encyclopedic and mentioning in your edit summary that you used content from w:Malá Fatra, which suffices for credit. I'd probably include something like this:
Malá Fatra is a karst mountain range in the Western Carpathians in the north-west of Central Slovakia. It lies between Nitrianske Pravno, Strečno, Martin and Zázrivá.
You could continue by mentioning that its tallest peak is Malý Kriváň, at 1,671 m, and so forth. It's OK to copy from Wikipedia as necessary; just mention the articles you got content from in your edit summary. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:58, 19 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
okay, I'll try that, thanks also for the summary suggestion! Andree.sk (talk) 07:34, 19 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
You bet! Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:46, 19 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Western Tatras

edit

Hi,

Just as a heads up, if the area you are describing crosses the borders of two countries (Slovakia and Poland) then it needs to be an extra-region, and at a higher level in the hierarchy (Central Europe).

If you want to create a national park just on the Slovakia side, then that can be a separate park article under Slovakia.

Hope that helps. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 21:38, 2 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hey! Oh, sorry 'bout that... I may have overwritten some of your changes - categorize it as needed. Intention was to only cover the Slovak part, but I guess there's no harm in doing both in one article. Andree.sk (talk) 21:41, 2 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
No worries, and thanks for the article!
Darien_Gap is another example of an article that covers two countries (Panama and Colombia). --Andrewssi2 (talk) 21:44, 2 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, as always, for adding so much great content!

The policy on links to Wikipedia is laid out at WV:Links to Wikipedia. What it amounts to is that inline links to Wikipedia are not allowed. There is a specific Wikipedia field that can be used in any listing, but nowhere else in a listing can such links be used. That might or might not make sense, and I doubt the current policy will last forever (I'm not sure it should, either), but right now, it holds. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:43, 3 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hopefully it will help someone... :) I'd just remove the mentioned article, I tried to drop all references to it already... While you are here - also Nízke Tatry should be renamed to Low Tatras to match other articles - but I don't have rights for that. Andree.sk (talk) 07:37, 7 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

See listing with no coordinates

edit

I just added this to the See listing to create a list of article with missing coordinates. Mainly to check guide articles without coordinates, see links at Category:See listing with no coordinates. However I now realise this will not work if coordinates are added from wikidata, using the updates you added to the map module. I am not familiar with Lua script so could you move this feature to the deeper code? Maybe also do for Eat and Sleep too. --Traveler100 (talk) 13:31, 9 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I can tell you straight away, this will match 95% of articles :-)) But anyway, no problem I'll add it into the module... Andree.sk (talk) 19:08, 9 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
thanks for adding. Also considering allowing NA as lat and long input for Not Applicable and not add to category. See sandbox. But this would now need to be added to the map module.
Also done for eat, buy, drink, sleep . See Wikivoyage:Dynamic maps Expedition/ListingCoordStats. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:40, 19 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Technical question

edit

Hi Andree. I was wondering if you might be able to help me do another technical fix over at the Hebrew Wikivoyage... I have been trying myself to add the GPX feature to the Hebrew Wikivoyage without much success (the little black "GPX" icon that appears on every page, at the top right side, at the English Wikivoyage). As you can see on this page, when it is added, it pushes the geo coordinates icon down and the banner becomes smaller as a result. What should I change in order to fix that and what code should I add so that the GPX icon appears on all pages? (I am an admin at the Hebrew Wikivoyage). ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 08:30, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hey ויקיג'אנקי! Unfortunately, I never did such stuff with mediawiki, so I have no idea... I'll have a look once I have some spare time, but don't cross your fingers... I think asking some admin, or on pub, or e.g. someone from these guys could maybe lead somewhere...? Andree.sk (talk) 19:39, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Will do. Thanks. ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 20:13, 27 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Your bot

edit

Could you please verify the edits of your bot. Adding wikidata to a marker does not display the wikidata link. You need to use listing instead. Also, why not also add the wikipedia link? Would be helpful. (It can easily be derived from the wikidata source.) Cheers, Ceever (talk) 21:34, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

hi @Ceever:! actually that's intentional behavior, check the "script nominations" page for the discussion. My primary intention is to auto-add coords+images and maps to the (relatively empty) region articles. I guess only advanced users will edit those anyway, so there's really no huge gain clobbering those pages with those icons... Andree.sk (talk) 21:42, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Aaahhh, I did not know. Well, the region levels for Altiplano need to be cut down anyhow, too much duplicate information. I now added all the information, but will update the region probably soon. Ceever (talk) 22:25, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Unilateral renaming

edit

Hi. I appreciate your impulse to do what you think is right, but please in the future do not unilaterally move and rename articles. The governing standard on Wikivoyage is not whatever some government does but Wikivoyage:Naming conventions, and there is a preexisting thread at Talk:Astana. In order to try to form a consensus behind a move, you will need to show evidence not that the Kazakh government announced something but that the new name is already the most used name for the city in English. Hiya. It may not be on your watchlist, so if not would you mind checking the most recent edits to the Slovak phrasebook for accuracy? Strange, I was sure I replied to you @Andyrom75:, but cannot find it anywhere now :-D Anyway, not sure if the warning would be worthwhile (whoever knows WD probably knows where to look, the other ones may have quite hard time to figure out what's happening anyway...) - but perhaps at least a default "black" (or rather some shiny orange/pink/red to hint a problem?) could be used in such case, instead of script error... I'll put it to my TODO list :-) -- andree.sk(talk) 15:04, 29 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

How's your French?

edit

Hi Andree.sk. I wonder if I could ask for your help with a buggy template?

On French Wikivoyage, there's a problem with a template used on our phrasebooks that's supposed to automatically translate the months of the year from French to various languages, but for some languages it translates into the wrong month. So for instance, on month 2 ("février"), it translates to English as "March" and Polish as "marzec".

You're probably the best template editor I know on Wikivoyage, but do you think this is something you would know how to fix? Communication won't be a problem, because we have speakers of English and Slovak on French Wikivoyage, but I don't know whether the programming itself would require a knowledge of French (we could probably help with that too).

So, if you have any time to spare, would you mind taking a look at the template to see if you can identify the problem? Best, ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 10:58, 31 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello and thank you for your concern in this case.
When ThunderingTyphoons! edited the English phrasebook, it was the 30th of the month; when I established the table in this discussion, it was the 31st and when you came to read it, it was the 2nd of the month. This is not the first time that I notice an error in the dates when I read them between the 29th and the 31st of the month. --Omondi (talk) 14:31, 2 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Your edit to the Hohe Tauern National Park page

edit

I see that you moved some description of the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße into the Heiligenblut page. I think the description is suited to both places. This could be a copy rather than a move; I plan to add the text back to the Hohe Tauern page while preserving your edits to the Heiligenblut page. Please let me know if you have concerns with that. Marvin The Paranoid (talk) 13:43, 6 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Marvin The Paranoid:, the problem is that with copying the content, they will inevitably get different edits. I have seen whole articles badly affected by this. In this particular case, I only found that the second copy of the listing exists by accident - I'm pretty sure a regular walk-by-editor would not check. So I think it's best to keep one copy (as is now), and the other one only as a reference, perhaps with some "advertisement info". Basically the same as should be done in region articles (in those, also the details should be omitted and left for the "final article")... IMO... :) -- andree 19:28, 6 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Don't understand nor do I agree. The same information being provided in two places is not indicative of a problem. End-users of WV may not have any intention of looking at the Heiligenblut page, but they may be interested in looking at the Hohe Tauern NP page or be interested in the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße information to decide on their vacation plan. Marvin The Paranoid (talk) 16:27, 12 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Marvin The Paranoid:, my experience is that duplicated content is a problem because of reasons above. I don't think clicking a "reduced listing" to get detailed info is such a drag, but... If you don't agree, edit it to your liking, it's a wiki afterall ;-) Cheers, -- andree 08:00, 13 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Template:Marker

edit

Hi Andree, could you give more information about this change? --Andyrom75 (talk) 21:45, 24 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Andyrom75 (talk · contribs)! I tried to figure it out, but it's been some time and the context is not to clear to me. I'd guess it helps with markers, so that they don't show icons when there are no coordinates - or to avoid wiki links for markers (and keep them for listings only). At least looking when at the Module:Map code. Well, it may be something along these lines, but I'd have to try harder to confirm. Does the code cause some troubles, or you are just doing security audit? :-) -- andree 20:53, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
But most likely, I think this is used in combination with lat/long=NA. Sometimes wikidata for some listings have coords even for e.g. carnivals. So we can override those and remove the coords for listings by the above. I recall talk about this, but I'd have to find the history somewhere... Unless you really need it, I'd rather be doing something else :-D -- andree 20:58, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

How to add on-click top map

edit

You added the topic "How to add on-click top map", and it took some time to understand that you deleted it completely so I could not find your request. It would be better to keep your message and add the hint that it was solved. But nevertheless I will answer it. Creating such a map consists of to tasks:

  1. Creating the map itself.
  2. Adding the markers, geolines and shapes using the KartographerLiveData from the HTML header. This task is more complicated.

To learn how to do this you can have a view to https://de.wikivoyage.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-MapTools.js. RolandUnger (talk) 15:37, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about the noise, Roland :-) I found the JS file, but so far didn't have time to completely figure out how to use it, and didn't want to bother you until I give it some thought. But if you can point me to the wikicode (or something) on de:wv, where the button and respective map divs are instantiated, that'd be great - otherwise I'll just try to reverse engineer the code later, it looks reasonable. I tried hacking it together in User:Andree.sk/North_Jutland, via voy-coord-indicator/voy-topMap/mw-kartographer-container div's (basically just wanted to create some clickable thingie, that would open a map depending on article's {{geo}}, but so far it doesn't do anything :) TIA! -- andree 20:08, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Map feature

Hello! I tried to look at the new POI map you created. I copied your .js page to User:Tbennert/common.js. Then I cleared my cache (several times). I open an article and can't find anything different on my screen. I tried Billings and Laurel (Montana). Clicked the map on the page, clicked the map in the upper right corner. Where do I go to see the overlay? Thanks! Tbennert (talk) 00:12, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hey! Must be some bug then. If you don't see the wikidata icon on the top right of the pages, there may be some issue with the skin compatibility or something. First check that the 'Custom JavaScript' in the 'for all skins' section here points to your common.js (99% it will). Then make sure you don't use the 'MinervaNeue' skin (all the others seem to work for me). And finally, if you have chrome, you can press "Ctrl+Shift+I" to open DevTools - there switch to 'Console' tab and if there are some issues printed, please paste it here. Cheers. -- andree 06:43, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
