Questions
edit>> Not a classical spinner, Underwood was closer to medium pace and was often unplayable on the seaming English wickets.
Was he good on seaming wkts too ? I have heard only about rain affected wickets.
>>> He played county cricket for Kent and was also one of two England cricketers (the other being Alan Knott), to feature in Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket in the late 1970s.
What about Tony Greig ?
"Not a classical spinner, Underwood was closer to medium pace (officially slow-medium)". Slow-medium is 40-49mph - pretty slow even for a spinner! Lfh 11:47, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- In order... yes he was very good on seaming wickets. And also very good when it was swinging or seamin. He used seam, swing and spin equally well and often in the same over. When the ball was doing nothing he still had accuracy too!. Yup Tony Greig, Graham Gooch, and Bob Woolmer (perhaps others..) were England players that played World Series. But both Knott and Underwood were from Kent which what the original edittor was probably trying to get at I guess. Lastly he bowled at speeds "either side of medium pace" (cricinfo), "respectable medium pace" (wisden) - far faster than any spinner I can think of playing today. On occasions when conditions favoured normal spin bowling he dropped his pace to get more spin but he was basically a medium pacer that spun it most of the time. Put simply his bowling style is not that easy to pigeon hole! And no, most spin bowlers are considered "slow" not "slow medium" which is a step up in pace. Most spin bowlers bowl at 45-55mph rather than wihin the bounds of what is technically slow bolling - ie below 40 mph. Underwood was often described as slow medium to denote something a bit faster than the ordinary. --LiamE 22:58, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- I dug this out.... the man himself bowling —The preceding unsigned comment was added by LiamE (talk • contribs) 00:10, 15 December 2006 (UTC).
- I see what you're getting at. I don't think anybody actually bowls "slow" technically; most spinners are slow-medium or medium-slow. But by the looks of it Underwood bowled at medium pace, with spin. And they keep saying Panesar bowls too fast. Lfh 00:16, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- Some said that Underwood bowled too flat. Usually while they were walking back to the pavillion after missing the inswinger. --LiamE 00:29, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
Unplayable
editThe term "unplayable delivery" is often bandied about by cricket comentators. Sometimes with good reason, and never more so then when talking about Derek Underwood. Have a look at this and feel glad you weren't batting that day. There is not a batsman born that would lay a bat on that in a month of sundays. And not a bad take by Knott either. --LiamE 21:53, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Death date
editIt seems perfectly fine to have "circa 15 April 2024" or "April 2024". I don't think we need circa if we are not giving the day, April is an abundance of caution already, as we are mid-month. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 14:08, 15 April 2024 (UTC).
