In the terminology that I have learned, Geographic coordinate systems are distinct from Projected coordinate systems.

I have only studied one GIS system (ArcGIS), so this may not be universal. But in ArcGIS, "Geographic Coordinate Systems" is not related to maps or distances on maps; it is related to angular measurements: degrees-minutes-seconds, decimal degrees, etc.

In Wikipedia, various projected coordinate systems (map projection definitions) are listed in the category "Geographic Coordinate Systems".

Because this is confusing, I suggest that the map projection definitions be listed under "Map Projections" and that the category for "Geographic Coordinate Systems" be used for explanations of how terrestrial-type (hard-surface) bodies in the solar system are described.

The term "Projected Coordinate System" should also appear on this page, with an explanation that it is also referred to as "map projections". Bonnie108 (talk) 13:35, 18 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
