Just 'cuz I'm curious...

edit

Hmm ... you wrote copyright law forbids the creation of derivative works without express permission from the copyright holder. But MATTEL INC. v. WALKING MOUNTAIN PRODUCTIONS [1] indicates a much greater leeway for transformative uses of copyrighted material. (And I really am trying to understand some of the finer legal points here...) Wikipedia would therefore be a "derivative" work in your view? Because I thought I read somewhere in this whole debate that taking a widely-released publicity photo and putting it in a non-profit encyclopedia would likely be more transformative than derivative. As I said, it's just 'cuz I'm curious... Jenolen speak it! 10:40, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

G'day. I hope you can spend a little time to take a look at the article and offer some comments on it.– Matthew A. Lockhart (talk) 10:23, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Added a little info on the Trisakti. As the sources (offline) that I've consulted so far made no mention that the Crown Colony flag and the 1870 flag was used together, I left out the 1870 flag, but made certain additions to the article.– Matthew A. Lockhart (talk) 18:50, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair Use of City of Chicago Maps

edit

Thanks for the Campbell's Soup explanation. On an unrelated fair use issue, I would like to add the Official City of Chicago Maps to all 77 City of Chicago officially designated community areas. What is necessary in this regards for uploading the 77 different .pdf files and appending them? TonyTheTiger 08:20, 10 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am not sure I understand how either #1 or # 2 applies. #1 I believe it would be quite difficult to freely replace the map in order to adequately give the same information. #2 The maps are not being sold by the copyright holder thus use on WP would not make it so that one no longer needs to purchase the actual product. Nor would it truly replace the original market role of the original copyrighted media which serves (IMO). Please eplain further. TonyTheTiger 15:39, 10 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

The question of capitalising of the letter "t" in The of The Beatles has been raised again. It appears that UK style references (here and here) also maintains that the letter should be in lower case. If possible, please provide sources/references to support your position.

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Lg_new_coke_logo.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Lg_new_coke_logo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. How did you get permission to use the Dewan Negara picture?

edit

Hi John. For the picture uploaded by you onto Wikipedia, found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Dewan_negara.jpg, how did you obtain permission for fair use, and from whom did you obtain this permission? Thanks. AppleJuggler 12:16, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Appreciate your rapid response. Are American copyright laws consistent with Malaysian copyright laws? Could a situation arise where an authority from the Malaysian Parliament questions the use of this photograph on Wikipedia, despite the 'fair use' tag which, as it appears to me, is often very carelessly and broadly applied? WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter
Issue 010 – February 2007

Beatles News
  • George Harrison's handwritten lyrics to the song While My Guitar Gently Weeps have fetched $300,000 (£152,552) in a Scottsdale (Arizona, United States) memorabilia auction (15 January). It contained lines omitted from the final version of the song. Specifically :
I look from the wings at the play you are staging
While my guitar gently weeps
As I'm sitting here doing nothing but aging
Still my guitar gently weeps

On the reverse of the page appears the lyrics to Hey Jude in the hand of Mal Evans.

Project News
  • The Project lead article (The Beatles, for those not paying attention) has had its Good Article status reviewed, and the consensus was 'keep'. The efforts of User:Andreasegde in supplying the requested citations, and other editors in helping with general editing, and the strength of arguments for retaining the grade sufficiently impressed the reviewers.
  • After a great deal of work Paul McCartney was promoted as a Featured Article candidate. Unfortunately it failed to succeed. Among other comments, including the correct length of dash (or hyphen), from reviewers was that the article was too long and also that it needed further information included in some of the sections(!?) The promotor, and driving force behind the insertion of a great many references, citations and facts (and the remover of unwanted text, and splitter of information into daughter articles), Andreasegde vigorously argued the case for promotion but was unsuccessful.
  • Mimi Smith was successfully nominated for WP:Good article status. The major editor to whom accolades should be directed is... Andreasegde.
The Beatles' Influence on Recording Music by Apepper and Wings 1973 UK Tour by Danthemankhan.
  • The hottest Project page this month was possibly, despite the Article Status related issues regarding both The Beatles and Paul McCartney mentioned above, the third attempt to delete The Beatles trivia in less than a year. As was the case for the second attempt at AfD the result, after an energetic discourse, was keep but with a suggestion that the article be retitled to reduce the incidence of deletion requests. Editors are invited to discuss possible new titles, and/or the need for same, at Talk:The Beatles trivia.
  • Other Project news - Lar did a bit of a purge of the subscription list during last month's newsletter delivery. Some folks were kept (and are at the active list), some who clearly are not active on wikipedia at all were removed with a "you've been removed" message left (and are at the inactive list), and some folks who were less active but not as clearly completely inactive were given a "this may be your last newsletter" message (and are at the possibly inactive list). A more nuanced subscription list is now here (in several subpages as outlined above), and anyone who wants to tweak their status (moving one's self back is a clear cut sign that we should deliver the newsletter to you!) should feel free. Please respect the rather spartan formatting though, this list is used by WP:AWB currently, and may be used by other automation in future.
Issue of the Month

Hottest issue or concern for this month is the perennial matter of Project articles losing their Good or Featured Article status. The main Project page now includes a status board that gives the current ratings of some of the more important articles. Let's make sure the core articles (The Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr) reach or retain Good Article status, if not Featured Article. If you are aware of another major article whose status is at risk, add it to the board.

Issue of last Month

Since there has been no response in the matter of the use of lowercase for the initial letter of the when applied with Beatles from the opponents, it is likely that the case for using lowercase only will be adopted as Project policy by default. User:LessHeard vanU will draw up a recommendation and submit it to the Policy talkpage in a few days.

Cybergrind

edit

I don't understand your action. The debate showed the outcome as 'no consensus' but the article has been deleted and protected. Why this antagonism towards a random music subgenre? In any case, the basic description was merged into Grindcore as a subgenre of it, so I don't see what the harm would be in at least making Cybergrind redirect there. Also, the page included a useful list of bands that is now inaccessible. This list should at least be copied into List of Grindcore Bands and pasted there under the "Cybergrind" subheading. Please don't ignore this. I understand that you may think this is just some made-up crap propelled by a few stupid kids, but the reality is that there are plenty of underground subgenres that will exist despite your dismissal and disparagement of them. It's hard enough to find reliable, non-biased information on underground music as it is without people trolling through Wikipedia deleting anything that's not pop or classic rock. Honestly, I think Wikipedia would be a lot better if editors restricted their jurisdiction to topics that they had some basic knowledge of. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Baligant (talkcontribs).

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter
Issue 011 – March 2007

Beatles News
  • On February 5, 2007, the Beatles' Apple Corps and Apple, Inc. (Apple Computer) announced a settlement of their latest trademark dispute involving use of the Apple trademark on the iTunes Music Store. In May of 2006, the High Court ruled in favor of Apple, but Neil Aspinall, manager of Apple Corps, vowed to appeal. Evidently, in the intervening months, the two companies negotiated a settlement. The settlement is discussed in this AP story. For background on the case, see Apple Corps v. Apple Computer. For fans, this may mean that Beatle music will be available someday on iTunes. Despite rumors of a February 2007 release, the material is still unavailalble.
Project News
  • There were no Project article adoptions for the month of February.
  • Project Policy has now been altered to reflect that the use of lowercase for the letter "t" of the word "the" in the Beatles is now considered the correct rendition.
Member News
  • New members to the project since the last issue include (although the first is a long time contributor who apparently has only just found the Participants section);

Issue of the Month

See below. There is genuine concern that the Newsletter is getting stale in terms of content and variety, and that the same individuals are featured each month. Furthermore, lack of "news" is hindering the timely distribution as the editors wait for something to report. All Project editors are encouraged to give their news, suggestions and thoughts to keep the 'Letter vital and interesting. If making direct contributions do not appeal, please give a mention on the Newsletter talkpage and it will be incorporated!

From the Editors

Help is needed for the job of putting future Newsletters together. The present incumbent is finding it difficult to reflect the breadth of the Project, focusing on much the same individuals and articles each month, and has decided to beg for contributions from other individuals. Interested persons need only start working on next months issue to qualify. It really is that simple!

If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Hi Johnleemk. I noticed the song sample you uploaded in 2004 on today's featured article, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. The song sample is 37 seconds, which is longer than the permitted "fair use" sample length under U.S. copyright law. Song samples must not exceed 30 seconds in length, or 10% of the duration of the recording, whichever is shorter. You can read more at Wikipedia:Music samples and Wikipedia:Fair use. Would you be able to upload a new sample which is less than 22.5 seconds long? Thanks. ~MDD4696 05:47, 23 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

weasel word

edit

Regarding your edit here: Is Miller "some" who "believe"? It's still a weasel phrase and tagging it with the {{weasel word}} tag is the right thing. According to Wp:npov#A_simple_formulation, if there's a source for that a statement, it should be stated in the text who exactly (e.g. Author X) says what exactly (e.g. Quote Xy). So, if you know that this is attributable to Miller, please go ahead and rephrase it accordingly, and then delete the weasel tag. —AldeBaer 01:25, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're right, I could have fixed it myself. I just thought that removing the weasel tag without fixing it is not best practice. However, thanks for taking care of it. —AldeBaer 14:50, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I just wanted folks to know about real vampires.

edit

I just wanted folks to know more about actual real vampires not just the ones in Hollywood. For centuries real vampires have lived in secrecy and practice the faith in secret. The whole negative discussion as to why my articles should be deleted just validates and supports vampires living in secret and not sharing anything about our lifestyle or faith with the mundane public. (Thank God the rest of the world is a little more open minded and civil, than some of these disgruntled, bitter, Wikipedians. I find myself laughing at the bitterness and hostile tone of some of these people. They should put this kind of energy into finding a cure for AIDS or ending world hunger. It is amazing that so many obviously, disgruntled, unhappy people are on Wikipedia. I guess not a lot of happy go lucky, out the coffin vampires like me are on Wikipedia. Maybe more people should take up the vampire faith. Although it might not help some of these severely depressed and repressed souls. Vampires just do not have the time or energy for this kind of negative energy. I feel really sorry for all those people who have nothing better to do besides sit around and discuss why someone does or does not have a right to post something on Wikipedia. It is really sad and precious time wasted on having a nasty attitude and a closed mind. These people make me thank my lucky stars I am a proud and very happy vampire.

Many Blessings and Hope All those Unhappy Wikipedians find something positive to do with their time and energy.

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter
Issue 012 – April 2007

Beatles News
  • On Friday 30th March, a deranged fan was held after attempting to force his way into Paul McCartney's mansion. See here for more details.
  • Apple Corps continues to make news, after the recent settlement with Apple Computer over the use of the Apple trademark. On April 10th, the company announced that long-time chief executive Neil Aspinall had stepped down and had been replaced by American Jeff Jones. It was also announced that another long term dispute, this time with EMI over royalties, had been amicably settled prior to Aspinall's departure.[3][4]
Project News
  • The article "Jeff Jones (music industry executive)" suddenly becomes of top importance in the Apple sphere of Beatledom. User:Kingboyk has created a stub on the man, but the article needs urgent beefing up (including basic biographical data such as date and place of birth) and, if possible, a photograph of the new Apple chief executive.
  • With the debate over "the Beatles" vs "The Beatles" continuing to cause ill feeling and a number of resignations from the project from advocates on both sides, Kingboyk attempted to diffuse the situation by blanking the Project Policy page and tagging it as {{historical}}. Although this unilateral action hasn't been reverted as of the time of writing, the reaction was mixed, with two members rejoining the project and others stating their disagreement. Assistance wanted re: previously failed RfA.

edit

Dear Sir,

I would like to ask for your assistance. About 14 months ago, I self nominated for an RfA, which I ultimately withdrew (see here). During that RfA, you lodged an oppose vote, and I have taken a lot of the comments from that failed RfA on board since then. I am now up to an average of near on 875 to 900 edits per year, having only recently got back to the net from health issues (Throat cancer), and I am once again considering attempting a request for adminship. I am writing to all those editors who opposed my original self-nomination to ask them to see if they would be kind enough to review my recent work, and to see whether they consider that I have taken those points from my old RfA on board enough to warrant another attempt.

I am enjoying getting back into the swing of working on Wikipedia again, and looking forward to enjoying many more years of work. I am now using Twinkle and VandalFighter for my reversion work on RCP and CVU, and looking to the future.

Thank you for your time, and for your comments.

Greetings, Johnleemk. I am sorry to bring this to your attention, but I see you have dealt with IP 221.148.48.216 earlier. Due to continued and widespread abuses, I have reported this IP to Suspected Sock Puppets. In addition to blanking the IP talk page of warnings, this IP has improperly used multiple user accounts. The abuse continues; my report of sockpuppetry is here: [5] if you have the time to contribute. I hope you do not mind, but I have quoted your statement regarding the final warning on the IP talk page (in the conclusion), as it sums up exactly the problem we are dealing with.

Harry Kretchmer

edit

The article is about a fellow student at my college, of little note. The notability of the article has already been disputed and it should be deleted. He has created the article purely for publicity reasons, the article is not serious and is a joke; the fact that he is on Wikipedia for some rural newspaper articles written when he was 16 and a minor film appearance (which he obtained through living in the area of where the film was made, not talent) when he was 7 is a joke, and should be treated seriously if this resource has any integrity. I myself have have appeared on television a few times, most notably on the BBC's University Challenge, as well as writing for college publications and appearing in the student newspapers, yet do not have the gall to create an article about myself. I would suggest you think about the integrity of this resource as a reference tool, then look again at Harry Kretchmer, then take the correct course of action and delete this worthless article of no reference value. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 129.67.63.62 (talkcontribs).

Deletion of Fundadores article

edit

Please explain why you deemed this article spam? I would take issue with you on this point. The article is intended to be purely informational, and part of that information includes identifying brand owner, manufacturers, etc., the kind of data that cigar smokers want/need to see. If your objection is to the fact that the information was cited as coming from an online dealer catalogue, that is unfortunate, because that is currently the only source for this info. It may or may not be included in a future edition of Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars, but until/unless it is, I have no other source for the information included in the article. Please advise me of what you deem necessary in order to remove the article from the category of spam and move it into the realm of information. If I have not heard from you within three days, I will re-publish the article unchanged. Further, I have absolutely no connection whatsoever to the brand owner/retailer. Thank you. Non-free use disputed for Image:Yesterdaysample.ogg

edit
  This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Yesterdaysample.ogg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Fair use rationale for Image:Real-Love-sample.ogg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Real-Love-sample.ogg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. 165.228.129.11's edits on Jeff Ooi

edit

Hi. It's come to our attention a user under 165.228.129.11, registered under a Australian ISP, has been censuring and adding unreferenced attacks on the Jeff Ooi article.[6] [7][8][9][10] This behaviour clearly ignores both WP:CENSOR and WP:SOAP. Similiarly, the same IP address was used to perform minor vandalism on the same article in late-May and early-June.[11][12][13] Not suggesting the editting patterns are of the same person though.

Several people have revert changes made by the Telstra user, but the user has clearly remained persistent, reintroducing the same form of commentaries since the beginning of July. Your assistance is much appreciated.

Thanks. - Two hundred percent 01:26, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Defamation is unethical.

Hi Johnleemk,

I am using userID :4867219 (the IP you blocked)

I work for a PR firm. I try not to make wikipedia a commercial place which become a platform to defame companies without proof. My team of 2 person recently did a successful round of misinformation damage control for an International client using public education and soft fixing to avoid being too personal and stay within the line of truth and justice. The process went smoothly and cleared many unclear misunderstandings, and received strong media and public support. When I saw the Jeff Ooi vs commercial issue, the misinformation came long way to wikipedia carrying baseless claims, I have to fix this unfair event.

Refers to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Ooi

The User bio was OK to cite "facts" without framing "names" of "selected target" he wants to target. Unfortunately until this happens: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jeff_Ooi&oldid=139193098 The User on 13:07, 19 June 2007 by username of Relaxtoday posted this statement:

Subject : SMS Scam

Currently Jeff is devoted in revealing SMS scam on his blog. His effort has gain mainstream media attention. He managed to show proof that companies like Macrokiosk and NextNation are involved is SMS spoofing, and also MCMC's lack of control over such problem.

Which is unfair to the target company, a system provider which serves large corporate customers (refers to their website) which has nothing to do with the issues Jeff wanted to make a point. I would suggest it could be fair and ethical to display a commercial issue without the smell of commercial defamation like this:

Subject : Spawned Clearer Defination of SMS, Spam and ScamSMS, Spam and Scam

The 1st sentence: "Currently Jeff is devoted in revealing the different stake holders in mobile industry and his effort has spawned the public to better understand the difference of SMS, spam and scam on his blog. His effort has gain some media attention" (arguable, only 1 small tabloit mistakenly quote "company names" which had appologized the next day for "misquotation". Jeff took that as his credit, but he did not slow the article "next day" which appology for their mistakes. In actual fact, the "main stream" media did not get the piece of information from Jeff but the vendors who being baselessly accused did their clarifications. The press in fact clearly explained the difference of SMS, spam and scam, and "did not name any software vendors such as <targetcompany1> and <targetcompany2>" in the press, and that is professional. Jeff can't get a credit for what the vendors PR company did and twist the facts. That is the type of ethical press freedom we want to see in Wikipedia. The vendor <companyname>, which was clarified by the authority as "unrelated" to SPAM or SCAM or SPOOFING, was "released from the mistaken accusation", so why Jeff take it personally? Because he can't proof, he has to make story to support his claims? Refers to: http://mobilebedsidenews.blogspot.com/2007/06/draft-technology-101-hardware-software.html and http://www.mcmc.gov.my/consumer/non_compliance.asp). Read the industry blog reveal the truth, and the MCMC statement which has nothing to do with "SPAM, SCAM or SPOOFING".)

The next defamation statement is unnecessary and too personal "He managed to show proof that companies like <target company1> and <target company2> are involved is SMS spoofing, and also MCMC's lack of control over such problem." This could be fairly quote as "He managed to show some proof of sms issues and trying to find the relationship between the issues and the stake holders, namely the mobile operators, the vendors and the public."

Jeff "FAILS" to proof that there is any SMS spoofing out there (no UFO ok!) despite some spam which has nothing to do with the 2 victims. The statement above is a commercial attack without proof. Until today, there is no single proof of "SPAM, SCAM or SPOOFING" did by the 2 victims(Quote spoofing proof here if can find 1 piece of scientific evidence). In actual fact, the actual vendors which has clients doing SPAM was not cited, such as: Mobile365 (aka Sybase365), AKN Mtech and Lanetro Zed. Why Jeff only wanted to target only 2 companies but not the other vendors? Read this detailed analysis: http://mobilebedsidenews.blogspot.com/2007/05/akn-mtechs-uncle-lim-man-who-kills.html

Technically and realistically, there is NO WAY any third party could do spoofing except mobile operators themselves. Jeff good intention to stop SPAM or SCAM, is like many techies who wanted to stop email SPAM and SCAM, which is OK. Despite many good intention friends remind him of his misjudgement, he still promote baseless SMS spoofing story until he touches misinformation on "financial numbers", which is serious crime in Malaysia. Finally Jeff Ooi stopped his baseless comments. Jeff is indeed getting into trouble and proof himself of "generalize" different issues and "defame" people mixing truth and lie.... which is sad to see he step into the other side, went too far.

Questions:

1. Jeff Ooi on his website has been feeded mix sources of information, "generalize" SMS to SPAM and SCAM. Just like people used to generalize email providers = spam = scam supporters.

2. Jeff Ooi highlighted the companies which provides system and has basic system errors, which has been "proven unrelated to spam or scam or spoofing", and was released from MCMC questions. The authority questioned "all the top 20 vendors", not just the 2 names Jeff Ooi pick for some reason.

3. There is not a single proof of spoofing up to date, nor spam or scam related to the vendors. There are "SPAM and SCAM" from China and South Africa reported in the past, which are totally other issue.

After the local media and public had made known to "differentiate SMS, SPAM and SCAM", during June 2007, the misinformation and people who over carried by Jeff's generalized blog has resulted in spoiling Wikipedia? Is this what Wikipedia suppose to be a baseless commercial defamation platform?

The Wikipedia Earth did it right by revert back the original unspoiled posting: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jeff_Ooi&oldid=144760085

However, for some reason, the "Relaxtoday" wikipedia user seems to be supporting baseless defamation work and add the no proof statement again on: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jeff_Ooi&oldid=144765568

Is this what Wikipedia will end up with, supporting commercial defamation and personal attacks?

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Badruddin_amiruldin.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 08:13, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nick plays the drums, Kevin plays the piano and keyboards, Brian plays the Guitar (usually accoustic), AJ plays the bass guitar, and Howie plays the Electric Guitar. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sweetheart8181 (talkcontribs) 17:44, 19 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use Image:Salleh_Abas.jpg

edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Salleh_Abas.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 20:13, 1 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Beatles-singles-please-please-me-us-2-1.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Beatles-singles-please-please-me-us-2-1.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 06:54, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

AfD nomination of McDonald's urban legends

edit

An editor has nominated McDonald's urban legends, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/McDonald's urban legends (2nd nomination) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 20:44, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question about the script CloseAFD

edit

Hi. I see you created this so was wondering if it were possible to add another feature to it. Actually, half a feature. When relisting AfD's, this script only adds the Template:Relist to the AfD page. Is it possible to have the script move the entry to the current days AfD log as well? Maybe, maybe not, I just know that would help the process ;-) . Thanks. - Rjd0060 (talk) 01:33, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have an idea that might make this easier; have the user open up the current log in another tab/window, and then get the script to insert the relisted AFD under the "add new entries here" comment? Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 01:36, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Conclusion: Image placeholders centralized discussion

edit

Hi. I'm sending this to you because you participated in the Centralized discussion on image placeholders that ended on 23 April.

That discussion must produce a conclusion.

We originally asked "Should the addition of this box [example right] be allowed? Does the placeholder system and graphic image need to be improved to satisfy policies and guidelines for inclusion? Is it appropriate to some kinds of biographies, but not to others?" (See introduction).

Conclusions to centralized discussions are either marked as 'policy', 'guideline', 'endorsed', 'rejected', 'no consensus', or 'no change' etc. We should now decide for this discussion.

Please read and approve or disapprove the section here: Conclusion --Kleinzach (talk) 11:24, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please note this message conforms to WP:CANVASSING and has not been sent to anyone has not already participated in the centralized discussion.

Notability Problem

edit

Hi Johnlee, Hope everything is going well. You might remember me from the days when I frequented heavengames.com as Sharpe novel reader. I've run into an issue regarding an article, and after remembering you were a wikipedia administrator I was wondering if you could give me some advice?

I have been editing an article on a local politician who I'm friends with, however opposition activists have repeatedly deleted the article citing it breaches notability guidelines. From what I understand, a local politician is not automatically disqualified from an entry provided they are notable outside of the immediate area in which they serve as an elected politician. My friend has appeared on a number of national politics shows providing a local government politicians perspective on central government grants. The article in question is "Jeremy Moulton" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Moulton) which has been redirected to the Southampton article repeatedly despite my complaint in the discussion section of the page.

Cheers

Emily Oster is not notable

edit

Emily Oster

edit

A tag has been placed on Emily Oster, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising that only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this article is not blatant advertising, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add {{hangon}} on the top of Emily Oster and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would help make it encyclopedic, as well as adding any citations from reliable sources to ensure that the article will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

Emily Oster is not notable. Her page constitutes advertising for her own agenda. There are many many economists much more famous than her and none of them have pages; probably justly so. Please delete her entry.

You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please Correct Mistake

edit

Hello. I was checking material on my favorite anarchist writer, and I noticed that wikipedia had deleted an article on him even though the "majority" were opposed. In your deletion you posted a comment on "this is not a majority decision," but it looks like a "Soviet-style" rigging to me. Please take another look.

The deletion vote is here, with the majority voting to "keep" before you deleted it. (Note that the keep won by 10 to 7, but you deleted it!)

The anarchopedia article on the person is here:

http://eng.anarchopedia.org/index.php/Mark_Mirabello

Note that on anarchopedia he has more hits than Jesus and Bush!

Thank you. Cheers.

(Another point: If you refuse to reverse your decision, to whom may I address my complaint? I am not experienced in such things

Thank you for uploading File:C.C. Too.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

Sam Vaknin

edit

I think that the deletion of Sam Vaknin should be reconsidered - see Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Sam_Vaknin as:

  • one of the contributors to the discussion and a voter was permanently banned user User:Zeraeph who seems to have also influenced the vote of others. I also suspect that User:Senihele and User:72.16.41.16 were sockpuppets of hers. It was an established fact that User:Zeraeph did use sockpuppets from time to time (she admitted it) and she even has an associated IP range block.
  • the vote was not unanimous.
  • Sam Vaknin now has 59,100 Google hits so it is difficult to argue that he is not notable.

Orphaned non-free image File:Dewan negara.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Dewan negara.jpg. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Invitation to take part in Wikipedia research

edit

Hello,

I am doing research on Wikipedia in multiple languages to see how different Wikipedia websites enable people differently to act and contribute in their ways. A brief description of the study can be found on our project page on Meta-Wiki. The results would give guidelines for further development of Wikipedia in less developed languages.

As an active member of Wikipedia community, you are invited to take part in the study and share your experience about and understanding of Wikipedia with us. It would take 30 to 60 minutes of your time to have an online conversation about Wikipedia. I would be delighted to hear any of your ideas or feedback about the study. Please feel free to contact me with your questions and concerns related to this study and your participation. You can also find the email address on the project page.--WikiTafa (talk) 00:15, 18 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

MSU Interview

edit

Dear Johnleemk,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 23:05, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Meet-up: Editors from Malaysia

edit

Hello! You might or might not have seen me around here as I've not been active in Wikipedia the past few months. Before leaving for NS, it was my intention to form a Malaysian user group. I'm still very much interested in forming the group. However, before forming the group, I would love to organize a meet-up between editors of the Malaysian editing community to test the waters and hear what you guys might have to say. To my knowledge, there has not been a Wikipedia meet-up in this country before. I don't mind organizing the meet-up but need to know if anyone is interested in joining the meet-up. So... please reply and let me know if you would be interested in joining a meet-up and your ideas/thoughts about a user group. Thank you.

Looking forward to hearing from you, Bejinhantalks 12:29, 15 December 2012 (UTC) (Message delivered by EdwardsBot (talk) 12:29, 15 December 2012 (UTC))Reply

Your assistance please

edit

You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jane Street. I am sorry to say it looks like a serious lapse from WP:BEFORE on the part of the nominator and those who voiced "delete" opinions. Jane is going to be the route of a major light rail line, and has other justifications for notability.

Therefore I request userification.

There are two WP:RFCs at WP:FOUR. The first is to conflate issues so as to keep people from expressing meaningful opinions. Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

edit

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Concerns regarding FA quality

edit

I've just tidied up The Long and Winding Road a little, and removed some unsourced trivia. The article doesn't appear to me as either FA or GA quality in terms of coverage, prose, and MoS requirements - it was promoted in 2006, and reviewed again in 2008, and hasn't been well maintained. I will not have the time to tidy up the article or take my concerns further, however it seems appropriate to raise those concerns rather than merely pass on by, so, per the stage one process at Wikipedia:Featured article review I have left a note on the article talkpage, and am notifying relevant Projects. It is unlikely I will be getting involved further. SilkTork ✔Tea time 16:19, 18 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Extended confirmed protection

edit

Hello, Johnleemk. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

edit

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

edit

Hi Johnleemk.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

edit

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. — xaosflux Talk 21:21, 2 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

About Malaysian People's Party

edit

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Malaysian People's Party a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. Thanks for uploading File:UDA logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

edit

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

edit

Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:04, 1 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Adventure Games Live

edit

The article Adventure Games Live has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Zero sourcing found. Only sources are primary or TV Tropes which is not a reliable source. Parent article RinkWorks deleted ages ago.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

edit

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Invitation to participate in a research

edit

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
