Fungi

Fungi should also be included in the Food definition article. "The Kingdom Fungi includes some [very] important organisms, both in terms of their ecological and economic roles. By breaking down dead organic material, [fungi] continue the cycle of nutrients through ecosystems. In addition, most vascular plants could not grow without symbiotic fungi that inhabit their roots and supply essential nutrients."

"Living things are organized for study into large, basic groups called kingdoms. Fungi were listed in the Plant Kingdom for many years. Then scientists learned that fungi show a closer relation to animals, but are unique and separate life forms. Now, Fungi are placed in their own Kingdom."

Fungi includes foods like mushrooms, truffles and morels. Yummy!

The images are great but don't think that the content is representative of what most people are likely to regularly see. Under taste perception > Sweet there's a statement about how sweet stevia is that reads (to me, at least) like a commercial. Is stevia's sweetness notable? If it's the sweetest known chemical, for example, it would probably be worth mentioning. Scope of the article: Food in general or food for humans?

The article starts with

Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for an organism.

Which I understand to mean the article is supposed to treat food for all organisms. But the rest of the article treats "only" food for humans. To me this seams wrong.

I see at least the following options to resolve that:

  1. Restrict the current article to food for humans and make that clear in the introduction. Than have separate articles for animal food, plant food, … Link to those articles from food (disambiguation).
  2. add at least overview information about food of other organisms to the article.

Possibility of Division

I've noticed that the article for Food is very centered on human beings. However, there is a lot that can be written about food in general. I suggest splitting the article into multiple, one of which being called *Human food, and the others being spun off as needed. There is a lot of information on food, and a lot about human food ─ both can be beneficial to adding to the amount of useful and WP-helpful information on Wikipedia. Food categories

Present categories are superficial and useless, since each one contains many of the same foods by other classifications and people eat almost anything in any one of them.

Instead use the 19 food groups per the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Get rid of "List of food" sections. (Agreeing with a prior comment and adding on)

I personally think that the article should get rid of the whole List of food sections out and turn it into it's own list article, and make the Food article talk more about foods and diets other animals consume, and how food is digested, (with references with the decapitated chicken who consumed food through a person stuffing it into it's throat). Because I am not really sure how. I can't really think of a title that really covers it. List of human food is so broad Classifications and types of food (how it was originally headed here) is also broad and not quite correct either. Even if it was created it would still have the same problems it was labeled for arbitrary list of topics, that are not really "representative" or well organized for readers -- should be organized in a more discrete, focused, readable way. And to be honest it is not really an article/list I want to work on to get it working even if it was possible to write it in a way that made sense. I do want to work on this article however and the list was not appropriate here. I also didn't want to lose the information. I will most likely even go through it and see if anything can be put back in in a more focused section here. If anyone thinks it could work they are welcome to turn it into an article. This article has been tagged for having an excessive human-centric bent since last January (by Hidayatsrf). The long-term presence of the tag indicates that it has at least some buy-in, but there has been no action to reshape the article, and I suspect that if there were, there would be some objections, as there is a lot of good content on human food that we should want to preserve. Therefore, I'd like to see what folks think of splitting this article out into Food (covering all organisms, with a hatnote at the top) and Human food. The transition would likely begin by moving this page to "Human food", and then building the all-organism page at the current title.   • Personally I think it just needs a major trim. The classificatons and types of food makes no sense as is. Maybe split out List of human food if someone wants to preserve sections on frozen food, finger food, space food etc. Either way this should stay the main article on food in general as it is a primary topic. Support - This article definitely needs a split. Humans (usually) eat food for enjoyment, while animals (usually) eat food for survival, so splitting the articles makes sense imo. Then again, all living organisms need food to survive, including humans, so we could argue that we should just rewrite the article to make it both for survival and for enjoyment. Comment - Came across this discussion while looking into the Food article, and it's had me thinking for a few days: this is an encyclopedia for humans. Our relationship to food is so important, especially when considering its role in climate change. What if the Food article kept a human focus with a hatnote that says "This article is about human consumption of food. For information about food as it relates to other organisms, see x article[s]." I can't think of a time I've seen something like this, but I don't see why we can't approach this through the lens of what most readers are looking for when they land on a broad article like "food." I don't see a human-centric perspective as a bad thing, since that is what the majority of people will be coming here for. Only people read Wikipedia, any other organism wouldn't be able to. Articles on Wikipedia are also created and edited entirely by people, unless you count your cat jumping on your keyboard and editing a Wikipedia article as a result. Okay, but all jokes aside, I really don't see the problem with having this (or any article, really) article have a completely or almost completely human-centric perspective. Because I'm not satisfied with my close which is accurate but not conclusive, I'll comment myself and say that I believe the discussion seemed to desire a split of most of the direct detailing of human food and human food distribution from this article to a new pagespace, title and focus of which likely needs further consensus. hunger and satience

We need a paragraph on this. There is a wikipedia article on hunger and the biochemical mechanism of hunger, but not about satience = the feeling of being full, not hungry anymore, satisfied food-wise. Thy, SvenAERTS (talk) 13:15, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Gender connotations in food

I would like to add a section about gender connotations in food:

Generally, each species of the animal kingdom eats what is necessary to stay alive, whether males, females or baby animals. Food has no classifications, conditions or gender, it is eaten solely for survival instinct. However, there are exceptions where there are sex differences in food preferences. For example, female White_stork have been shown to tend to choose different types of birds for food, unlike males, who tend to prefer mammals. These differences are mostly attributed to differences in parental duties, physiology and anatomy of this animal.[1]

In the human world, in addition to the physiology, anatomy and parental duties of each individual, there is a species-specific phenomenon that greatly affects food choices, namely Gender_role stereotypes. A gender-based stereotype about food has been developing over the years, where certain types of food have gender connotations.

Based on gender stereotypes depicting men as agentic and women as communal, ingrained in our day to day, people have cultural expectations about what a masculine man or feminine woman should eat and in what quantity.[2] Moreover, these ideas are so ingrained in our day to day that the food intake and people ́s food choices can be influenced by the physical appearance of someone or the mere presence of others.[3]

Unlike animals, humans tend to regulate the type of food they eat and the amount they consume as a method of expressing their Gender_identity.[4] This distinctly human phenomenon leads people to engage in behaviors and eating patterns that are influenced, often unconsciously, by these stereotypes of feminine or masculine food, for example, the classic thought that meat is for men and salads are for women.

For meat supply and processing, powerful actions are needed, such as hunting, which represents strength, aggressiveness and virility. Due to the Patriarchy, these characteristics have been associated with men, so meat is a product with a masculine connotation that serves as a symbolic marker. On the other hand, femininity is more associated to the quantity of food, that is, to what women do not eat.[5] For this reason, dieting or eating light has a feminine connotation, and is often mocked in the world of men. Foods such as vegetables, fish and fruits carry a more feminine tradition, with softer characteristics, more delicate care and easier supply.

By living in a social environment, individuals acquire and learn a masculine or feminine eating style, congruent to their gender.[6] This eating style has an impact on their food-related practices and preferences, and also has social consequences. For example, on a global scale, it has been confirmed that both men and women who eat feminine foods are classified as more feminine than people who choose food with a masculine connotation.[7] The above demonstrates the power that food-related gender stereotypes have in affecting personal gender identity, which is why people tend to avoid food that is incongruent with their reference group, because this does not follow the supposedly appropriate behavioral patterns of their gender.

To understand the effect of gender on eating and drinking behaviours, it is very important to consider culture, since the same phenomena do not occur everywhere. For example, in countries like the USA, spicy food is gender-stereotyped, where it is associated with masculinity. However, in countries like Mexico, there is a spicy and chili culinary culture where everyone eats this type of food without being gender dependent.[8] Space and time play an important role in classifying foods as masculine or feminine.
