The EBRD will provide Egypt with a €165 million loan to upgrade its electricity transmission grid and reduce emissions. Starting December 13th, the loan will finance projects including a 500-kilovolt substation in Cairo, the replacement of an old gas-powered station in Shubra El-Kheima, and the construction of a 200 km high-voltage transmission line to transfer 2.1 GW of renewable energy from the Gulf of Suez. Egypt's Cabinet has approved UAE-based renewables developer Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) to advance solar and battery storage projects in the country. The decision, made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, with Masdar Chairman Dr. Sultan Al Jaber includes authorization for Masdar to explore a solar energy project of up to 4 GW. This follows Egypt's July agreement with the UAE to enhance the power grid by 4 GW of renewable energy next summer.
